280 ai

I have a new 280ai being built. Have been without one for a little while. Plan to try magnum primers. Have no clear rationale behind this but have never tried them. Dearly wish that I could get Lapua brass for the 280 ai.

I agree on the Lapua brass comment, that is why when I went with the 280 AI I used the traditional reamer designer instead of the SAAMI version. With the traditional version I just ran Lapua 30-06 into the 280 AI reamer which formed a false shoulder. Used as stout l280 oad of 4831 with 170 grain for fire forming.

58.5g of IMR 7828, Fed 210, 175g Nosler LRAB shoots bug holes, Lapua 30/06 brass neck turned. Bullets seated close to the lands, 9T.

I neck sized the 30/06 brass with a 280 neck sizer, used the 30 cal section to set headspace. 14.6g of bullseye and cream of wheat was a decent fire forming load.

Adjust your powder charge for 168's accordingly.

I could be remembering incorrectly so do not bank on this but 60.5 RL 26 and the 168 HVLD was good for me. I will reconfirm with my notes.

My 10y old is about to shoot Lapua brass in his 7-08. I chose the 6.5x47 over the CM just because Lapua did not make brass for the CM at that time. I do not have the time or reloading skills to make 30-06 brass work for the 280ai. I wish that Lapua would do a run of 280ai brass. Am thinking that there are now as many people shooting the 280ai as the 6.5-284.

with 162's I ran the H4831SC. But on a suggestion here I tried and IMR 7828SSC and WOW. insanely small groups for a Light weight Hunting rifle with a #3 Hart Barrel on it.
