280 ackley improved

I will let you know in a week after I shoot a match with it ! So far, on paper at 200yds it is doing very well. Mine likes a node around 2890-2900 and another close to 2990-3000 with no pressure signs... Just getting the first firing done on my brass and getting my fresh barrel to settle.

What bullet and powder are you using??

Personally I think the 280AI has a slight edge over 284, either version. I like the longer neck for the heavy long bullets. Mine likes RL-22 at 2900fps. I also shoot the 284 Shehane, both are almost identical ballistic twins.

Tony, I'm running nosler 280AI brass, 180 hybrids, 32" barrel, h4831sc and br2 primers. With 59.5 and virgin brass I get 2890-2900 and 1xfired and 60.5 I get 2990-3000. Temps are at 65F.

I find the 280AI a waste at the 2900 range because that is what my 284 likes. My 284 nodes are 2870 with h4350 and the 2900 range with h4831sc. If I were to stay in the 2900 range I would pick the 284 because it does it with less powder than the 280AI. My 284 runs at 2900 with 55.8-56.2 of h4831sc.

I went with the 280AI because I figured it would be like a 284 Shehane except the dies are cheaper. With either one you still have to put at least 1 firing on the brass before ES and SD settle down.

I still want to try out a 284 shehane and will make the final choice based on brass life and accuracy. So far my 280AI with less than 100 rds down the pipe is printing very good at 200 yards and it gets to go to the races in a week!

Thanks for the reply. I have a lot of experience with the 284 Shehane. For accuracy it is hard to beat but I have a barrel for the 280AI because I wanted to see if I could get up to the 3000fps node and I am hoping the primer pockets will hold up better than the 284 Shehane brass. I have a 32" 1:9 Bartlein chambered for the 280AI and I hope to get it to the range in the next month or so. In QuickLoad, it appears that all of the powders I've had good results with in the Shehane, H4350, H4831SC and IMR7828SSC, should work well in the 280AI just with more velocity. FWIW, I have mostly shot my Shehane at 2900 or a little less when I use H4350 with the Hybrids.

Tony, what would be acceptable primer pocket life over your shehane at 3000fps. 5-6-7-8-9 firings

I was never able to shoot it reliably at over 2975. Based on my experience, I would say one and done. My first set of Lapua 6.5X284 expanded lasted 12 reloading, mostly loaded for about 2900fps, before the first neck went but the primer pockets leaked after 4-5 firings. I just lived with the little black ring on the bolt-face which had no effect on accuracy.

Tony,I think you will get 8-10 firings on 280ai brass at 3000fps before primer pockets get soft if you have a 32 inch barrel and a 1-9 twist barrel. You will not do it with a 1-8 twist. This is my experience only

Have any of you tried Hogdon Hybrid 100V powder?

Kev77, is that 1st target shot with Matrix 190VLD? Or do they still make a 180gn bullet?

I think 100v powder would work very well,we have some shooters who do very well it in the 284.
And yes Marshal at Matrix makes a 180,its the 190 with a thicker jacket and a lighter core!!! Myself and one other person has these bullets only! DOES ANY ONE HAVE LOAD DATA FOR 100V POWDER AND 280AI!!!

I would be very happy with those results. Is that with Nosler brass??
