28 nosler

Just wanted to ask the professional gunsmith if there is a preferred action that would work good for the 28 nosler. I've been doing a little research and a lot of people say the stiller predator is the way to go . going to be shooting 180 or 195 Berger hunting vld. would like for the to feed from the magazine. what do you guys think? or do you think i should just go with a 700 action...Thanks

Stiller actions are not what they used to be. I build them on Borden Timberlines, Pierce, and Kelbly Atlas actions. My first choice being the Borden. Nothing wrong with a Remington either, and if it was between a Stiller and Remington Id do a Remington and save the money. You will need a Wyatts extended box with the 195. The reamer freebore will be quite different between the 2 bullets, personally I dont know why anyone would bother with the 180, the 28 and 195 were made for each other ;)
timberline it is ...What Barrel do you suggest what twist rate and what barrel length do you think I should go with to get maximum performance out of the 195. someone told me i should use you too build the rifle because you've built a lot of them but didn't have a number for you

Alex, as a bench gun for 1000 yard shooting, non-competitive with time to cool - can you guesstimate the # of accurate rounds with the 195's?
I would not recommend this round for Benchrest. I would say under 1k for certain. It is without a doubt my favorite hunting cartridge but there are better choices for Br. I will be doing some 30/28 Noslers. Running the numbers, should push the Hornady 225 .777bc 3000 fps. Slight trade trade off in ballistics but a gain in killing power.

I'm going to be hunting with this gun. how is your 28 nosler set up?

Mcmillan hunter (edge fill), rem 700 trued, Rock 26" rem mag contour (about a #4), 3 port Hawkins brake, jewell trigger. Weights 8.5lbs with talley rings and a leupold 4.5-14x50. I dont necessarily recommend the rem action. I dont have to pay for the work I did to my own action so I use them. Customs are similar in price in the end and hold their value much better. Keep in mind what you really want. I see a lot of "hunting" rifle built like tactical rifles. My 8.5 lb rifle will shoot under 1" at 300yds off a bipod. You do not need a 12-14lb rifle for a hunting rifle. I would hate to lug one around in the mountains. Unless your style of hunting is walking to a stand or blind and sitting, then I guess the weight wouldnt be as much an issue.
