28 Nosler with LRT

Working on my new 28 nosler. Its a savage 116 action, originally 375 ruger. Got a 28” shilen barrel, interrupted fluted by twisted barrel, and a AG Composite carbon stock. Zeiss conquest 6-24 on top. Roughly 11 lbs.

I bought some Ramshot LRT powder that was in stock, since no reloder 33. Figured id try it. These are the first shots down the barrel. Cleaned after the first couple 2-3 shots then ran 5-6 shots then cleaned as my break in. I did this over 3 range sessions trying to find pressure. Nosler data said max was 89. berger said 87.

ADG brass. Fed 215m primer. Ramshot LRT. Berger 180 hybrid. Saami chamber. 3.588” oal was about 30 off lands. I started there

Never seemed to hit pressure. Bolt lift was never stiff. Primers looked good, maybe starting to have a bit of a flatter edge look at 92.5-93. But def no ejector mark or anything. So may try a couple more higher but i think i may like 92-92.5. I shot two and they were right next to each other and one ragged hole respectively. So may load up some there and try again with the brake on. Right now its no brake

Nice rifle! How did you get an AG stock for a savage? Just thaught they did rem700's and clones? Please do tell
I found mine on ebay from a guy who was doing some. Hes also on a fb group savage owners. But AG also had a few smiths that would do them. Its expensive tho. Think Parish at Extreme Rifles was one. Robinson precision rifles was another

Nice rifle and thanks for sharing the results with LRT. I got come to try in a few rifles so this is encouraging.

With a new barrel, be sure and watch for speed-up as the round count grows. All barrels are different but some can really take off over the first hundred rounds or two. I just finished breaking in a barrel for my wife and it started out similar, shooting fast with more than normal powder and no pressure signs. By 200 rounds, my max powder charge was down 4% from where I started and it definitely slowed down and showed where pressure was.

Yeah i got 49 thru it now. Lol ready to move onto seating with once fired brass. Im gonna test the 92-92.5 range. I tried some rough seating with the muzzle brake at 92.5 and the last of the new brass and idk if it was me or just not a happy load but it didnt group well yet. So we shall see. Its hot out and i cant shoot more than a few before needing to cool this thing down.

Well so far after 100 rounds, i havent found anything i like yet. A couple two shots in same hole one shot abit off type groups. But i didnt realize i was jumping alot further than expected, i think the throat has moved alot more than i thought it would. I have to remeasure. I didnt have my 28 cal ogive tool so when i used the hornady oal tool and modified case, i just measured oal. I had got 3.618” prior to shooting. The other day i did the seat bullet/close bolt method to find hard jam that way and got 3.688”. I hope it aint moving that much and that maybe i didnt have it jammed with the hornady case method.

I been working with the 90.5 gr and 92.5 gr areas. I’m gonna keep an eye on the lands and measure using the modified case again. Try seating closer and closer. I went up to 20 off with the 92.5 grain load and 30 off with the 90.5 load. Resulted in 2 touching and one 1/2-3/4” away. So idk

Also need to check velocities again to make sure it didnt move out of a node as the barrel speeds up

Wanted to update. Barrel seemed to speed up some. Redid the hornady modified case comparator and got 3.630 oal or 2.895 ogive. So it moved 0.012 in those 100 shots.

Been doing a lot of 90.5 gr group testing and its always been 2 close and one off at 100. So decided try a ladder at 565 yards. So with my magnetospeed sporter i needed to take brake off which i discovered was tad lose and starting to come undone. Wonder if that threw my previous groups?
Ladder was 90 to 94 grain. I cleaned gun and put bipod on, made a couple foulers at 20 off hornady lands valve of 2.895 ogive so 2.875. Shot a nice 3 shot group with clean bore. Will revisit this. Then shot one at a rock at 565 to check my dope. Rest were all loaded to same length

Not sure what happened to the 92.5, if i didnt load bipod and it flung or not. Really surprised at that one. Rest felt ok. Started to have ejector and heavier bolt lift above 93. Might be coming into a high node but very hot. May be ok in cold weather it was 85 deg today. So like i figured it seems the 90-91 range is where i need to be, 90.5 may be it

Havent updated in a while. I basically threw away 175 bullets and 2 lbs of powder chasing accuracy at what i thought was a good node at 90.5 grain. The velocity spreads and the ladder seemed to agree that was it but i couldnt find anything from jam to 30 off. I went up through 91.5 grains too. I thought 20 off was the load but it didnt work out

I went down to 90 grains at the one seating depth and it looked better. Then started working back from 20-25 off and ended up at 35 off. Shot the first left pic 3 shot group. At this point it needed cleaned and then i went out a week later, fired 2 foulers then 3 more for group and it did the second pic. With the low hole being the 3rd shot after clean barrel and top two in same hole as last two shots. I should probably have done one more to see but im happy with this. When it cools down more outside i will shoot again at 565 and maybe stretch it out to 1400 to check the dope.

So it seems 90 grains even of LRT is pushing 180 hybrid to 3275. Base to ogive 2.860.
Sucks i went up to 3350+ but didnt find anything worth using. Only have 112 bullets left but 200 vld. Shall check those next I think

So i tried 195 bergers eol last week and this weekend. They do seem to like LRT. Found two nodes, one at 85 grains one at 88. I went with 88. With virgin brass it was shooting 3160 last week with two shots, and this weekend it shot 3155, 3137, 3134 with the 3155 being cold bore first shot. Group was good at .020 off lands. Will revisit with one fired and see what happens. But thats a powerhouse long range load! Thats cooking

As you said, LET is a dense powder!!
With RL26 being non existent had to find something to replace it with.

Using it in my 257 WBY Mag.
Charge weight is way above what RL26 was.

Looking to do ladder testing in the 7mm Rem Mag and 7mm Weatherby Magnum.
I'll be using 168gr Berger Classic Hunter in both.

Quickload calculates that your near 76,000 psig with that load.
I find quickload to be inaccurate. My starting loads were less than hodgdon max and i worked up. Hodgdon lists 85 as max with lrt. 85 gr said 2949 for hodgdons 24” barrel at 3.34”. Mine did 3040’s with a 28” at 3.64” or so oal. If you input my measured case capacity adjust the burnrate for the velocity, 85 gr load is showing 55,536 psi. My 88 gr load says 62,000

Quick Load is at best a GUESSOMETER :)

New batch of LRT required 1 less grain to make same velocity. So im playing around with 86.8-87.2 grains with the 195 berger now and still 3130 ish fps. Quickload doesnt account for that kinda variation lol
