That's what I figured, and with the stainless base on the high pressure rounds I'm curios as to how these will be reloaded (if they can be). I also wonder how many will "push" the brass case to get that 80,000 psi load (bad ju-ju IMHO).
 
With the government's deep pockets it might make sense. To me it seems like an exercise in frustration. The cost of cases alone has to be high. Seems like Carrol Shelby was right saying it's not how fast you can go but how fast can you afford to go or something to that effect.
Whether those cases will prove good is anybody's guess but I'm not so sure I'd want to be a long ways off and run out of ammo or find out it is susceptible to weather, corrosion and what not. The ammo might be lighter but how bout replacement barrels?
I had a custom knifemaker friend who has sadly died but back in the day I took delivery on a custom 220 Swift varmint for him. He took it to the range with some reloads and his targets only showed specks. his bullets were coming apart before they arrived on target. He got better bullets.
It does sound innovative, and I think Dave Tooley was working with it as well. I respect him. It'll be interesting to see if the government goes all in for it.
 
Wonder if the cases are even reloadable, you have two different metals forming a mechanical connection
and sealing 80k. May be a one shot deal.

So a future build goes something like this then....Custom action, nitrited barrel, tunerbrake and a case of the hybrid cased 150gr Accubonds. This should set a hunter up for quite some time.

The guy responsible for all the testing is on this thread and has answered questions but nobody seems to hear him
 
Simple math as it applies to sustained use @ 80K
some rough numbers
You decide
.473" case has a head measuring .176 Sq/in X 60K PSI = 10.56K PSI thrust
80K X .176 sq/in = 14.08K PSI thrust
.550" case has a head measuring .238 sq/in
.238 X 60K = 14.28K PSI
So it's about like an Ultra Mag

Only looking to Shoulder Bump and Neck Size...
Bolt gun not a Gas Gun... Want one in 7mm/.284, 28-30" barrel as a 1,000 yd winner.
The SS base should not need to be touched, especially fired in the same chamber.
If you wanted to FL size than perhaps a carbide ring at the mouth of the die {like pistol dies that do not need to be lubricated} The die would be similar to the case construction as it would be a two part and the carbide ring would be sizing the SS base while the die body did the brass part.
 
Has anyone started to neck up the .277 Fury to .284?
Looks to be a winner but waiting for Sig to get around to offering their own version may be a long wait.
Faster than a 284 SAUM, .284 Win or Shehane with less powder {hopefully longer barrel life and less recoil too!}
Only Sig is making a rifle with action components that will handle the reported 80K pressure but a re-barrel with a 7mm barrel of 28"-30" has me thinking of a new F Open winner.
The Sig rifle is well under $2K so it is a "doable" project without taking a second mortgage on the house...
Had a 7mm Rem Mag 1,000 yd rifle about 38 years ago but found it hard to find places to shoot that discipline around S Cal in those days {Ah, sweet bird of youth, where have you flown...?}
Also that big case of powder knocked the starch out of a shoulder after about 25-35 rnds!
Any opinions/suggestions from those who have played around with building an exotic would be appreciated.

BTW: I currently shoot F Open with a 6BR and holding well {put down a 118.8 out of a possible 120.20 at 700 yds last week} (English scoring system in OZ) until 800 & +, then it gets lots harder...
 
The only case that will handle the 80 K loads is the Hybrid (stainless base brass body). Sizing that base could be quite difficult using standard dies.
