.277-284 or 6.8-284

I'm sure its been done, but I don't understand why. There are a multitude of good .284 bullets out there to choose from but very few .277 bullets to choose from. We are also talking about an almost identical bullet diameter as well. What's the point?

Yes, it's been done by a few people. When the .284 Winchester was produced in the 1960's it was necked up and down to just about every imaginable caliber. At the time the .270 Winchester was still the major player in sub-.30 caliber big game chamberings, so bullet selection was relatively good and some .270-.284's cropped up. As the .284 case has now become primarily a target piece and not much has been done with .277" bullets in the accuracy world, the .270-.284 has fallen into near non-use.

As Tightneck said, with such a great selection of .264" and .284" bullets, there's not much reason to bother with the combo you're asking about.

With Berger making .277 bullets this could become a fun round to experiment with. Here is a link to some load data http://www.accuratereloading.com/270284win.html

Thanks for the info. I guess the point of it all is just to have a fun project. Something different. I hunt a lot more than target shoot, and my favorite hunting rifle is the 270 Win. I've always thought it'd be fun to have a SA 270. Unlike the 7-08, 243, 260, etc, the 270 got left out of the SA business. I did look into the 270 Redding, but wasn't happy with the velocity. My buddy is a retired Metal shop teacher and we've been having fun building up some rifles on 700 actions. So far we've been sticking to standard calibers.
