.271 Bushing for 6BR

Hi Gang,

I just started a 6BR project rifle,my first) and have a question about dies. The rifle that's being rebuilt was a .243. I mostly used RCBS body dies and a Redding competition seater. But I also had a Redding sizing die for the .243 with a Tungsten .271 bushing. I assume I'll be able to use this bushing in a Redding 6BR die when I get around to ordering the dies I need? The chamber is going to be cut standard, ie, no turn necks. Thanks. -Rod-

Rod,

You need to find out exactly what the neck diameter will be in the new chamber and go from there. I've seen "no turn" chambers go from a .271-.274+ so you need to know what you have before proceeding.

K. Well, the smith says he's going to use SAAMI specs... -Rod-

Rod -- dont do it!! Find out the neck dim NOW!

.271-.274, no more necessary for a no-turn

if he cant tell you the neck diameter of his reamer, you have problems.

YMMV,

Settle down, JB :D
My saying "He's going to use SAAMI specs" had nothing to do with me asking him the neck dia. That was just his answer when I dropped the rifle off and told him I wanted a no turn neck and I had asked him how tight it would be. I already planned on calling him and asking since I DO have this .271 here. -Rod-

Dunno what SAAMI spec is for the 6mm BR, but FWIW I have a .272" no-turn neck in my barrel. Fired brass comes out measuring a hair over .271", loaded rounds measure a little over .270", and I'm using a .268" bushing which gives me a .269" neck dia. before seating a bullet.

Short version... I think your .271" bushing is going to collect some dust. The good news is, they ain't that expensive, compared to getting a new gun built, so call up Sinclairs, get a handful, and get one of those little Redding green plastic snap-cases for holding neck bushings. Btwn .224, .243, .264, & .308 bushings, I'm almost due for a third ;)

HTH,

Monte

I agree with Monte. A .271 bushing would be appropriate for a .274 chamber, which is way bigger than necessary. If there is a standard for a no turn neck chamber it would be a .272.
Another thing you must consider is the free bore length in regard to what bullet/bullets you plan to use. Better find this out now before it's too late.

New titanium nitride bushing's can be had from Sinclair for less than $20 so that shouldn't be the driving factor for you to use that .271 bushing. I'm like Monte, I have bushings I'll probably never use again. That's the price of evolving in the reloading scheme of things.

Im settled :D Just was a little disappointed if that was all the info he could give you

Monte -- if it is a carbide bushing...they aint so cheap :D

a 271 bushing would be a good intermediate bushing for a SAAMI chamber but you still only have so much neck to squeeze in...a .271 bush wont let the case hold the bullet no matter what size your chamber is...the two arent related. WHether the chamber neck is .271 or .290 it wont determine what final bushing you use for neck tension...but it might make a few extra intermediate sizing steps :D

your loaded round will ALWAYS be around .269-.270 with lapua brass and a sierra or lapua bullet, so .271 wont work no how :D

Their is a lot of good info. being given here...there is also one more lil' thing ....the freebore...if the reamer is SAMMI ???? you probably wont be able to use the light bullets,or the Berger 96 VLD) without jumping them!!! The gunsmith should give u all the specs, reamer drawing) and let u decide if that is the chamber you want...if he doesnt know or care you are wasting your money and time...just to say SAMMI would make me wonder,,,very few varmint hunters let alone competitive shooters will accept a chamber that is not exactly what they want for a specific bullet or range or game...you will be the one with your shorts in a bunch when you spend a small fortune on a target grade gun and it is chambered with a reamer that has all the characteristics of a "shoe horn"...you are asking some of the most competitive and knowledgeable shooters in the world and they are trying to give you the best advice they can...you should listen and thank them for their yrears of experience, mistakes) and dont rush into the construction of a rifle that you wont be happy with...Roger

Roger,

Actually he and I discussed my slug choices for quite some time as well as what ranges I expected to use a given set of bullets. In fact this guy was gunsmithing for my uncle when I was a teen. He knows his stuff, I think. -Rod-

HI i would go for a 271 neck that is what i and others have with 6mmbr's and 6mm Dahsers they work verry well if you want more clearance go a 272 neck for bushings a 266 and 267 seem to work verry well with long VLD bullets molly coated i mainly use the 267 for target shooting and the 266 for hunting as i like a bit more insurance to hold the pfojectile in when they are getting bumped around. If you intend to use bullets as heavy as 105to107gr get 100 thou freebore and just Jump those shorter bullets you get less wind drift and mort energy with them anyway if you are hunting use 105gr A Max bullets or get the 107gr Sierra and use a meplate trimmer and make a large hullow point and the realy open up. Also your twist rate will decide your freebore because if you have a 8 twist you will likely use the heavy bullets and a 10 twist you need about 70 thou as you cant stabalise the heavier bullets.

Here is what i would do go to a gunsmith who fits long range 6mmbr barrels and get a barrel chambered to suit Redding dies and Lapua brass using an 8 twist barrel and 100 thou freebore. If you dont want an 8 twist go with wat the gunsmith reccomends also a 271-272 neck will fire all factory ammo available from Norma and Lapua so dont wory about the SAAMI chamber
