270wsm

Hi all

I will be picking up my new sako 85 270wsm at the weekend, ive managed to get hold of some 150gr Nosler BT and Hornaday SST's.

There very litle data about using the 150's so can anyone give me some load data etc including COL please.

Many thanks

i've also posted some of my own in the 6.5x284 vs .270wsm topic.

Well today i managed to try out my first batch of homeloads.

150gr sst RL22 powder col 2.900' Sako 85 .270wsm

i Tried from 64gr to 66.5gr with the 65.5, 66 and 66.5 being noticeably better grouping. I will try these loads seated in by 10 thou and 20 thou more as soon as i can.

I chrono'd the 64.5gr ones at 3140fps. so should be able to hit 3200fps with the higher loads and there was no signs of pressure, well ok only a tiny flattening of the primer.

So far its looking to be a great rifle and calibre! So far even on its lower load its producing more velocity/engery than my 7mag did with the same weight bullet.

I take it your not using a magnum primer

RL-19 and RL-22 seem to be the best choice for accuracy and hunting according to the sierra manual. i'm at the max charge of 65grs. of 4831 in sierra's book w/ no signs of pressure or decrease in group size. no where else i've looked shows to use this much powder so i'm thinking i'll leave mine where it's at.

what is the barrel length on ur sako and what size groups are you shooting? I also would like to know what primers you are using. i'm using magnum have always had better luck with standard primer, but have never loaded for something w/ this much powder before.

Barrel length is 24' factory.

Fed 215GM Mag primers Once ive got the most accurate i will try standard primers and see if they give better groups etc.

Groups are about 1/2'-3/4' but should drop with a little playing!

one group was less than 1/2' high but 1' wide, the others were 1/2' but the odd flyer.

Hi
i have been shooting the 270 wsm for quit some time now.
i would stop using the mag primer and clean the necks of your brass up, i take it you are using good brass,if you are using win brass you need to fully prep it to get it anything like.
but just use normal primers we found that it helps to stop flayers

i tried 58grs imr4350 at 1st, but notice way too many fliers so i swithched to h4831 and greatly improved groups. i have not noticed any fliers since i made the switch, only 2 thru clean bore)
i loaded a batch up w/ some primers i had left in the tray so i'm not sure if they are magnums or not. i know they are cci which is all i shoot. i figured if they're mag primmers then groups will be same and if they are standard than maybe they will tighten up. i know you want to load down when you switch from standard to mags and im pretty sure i wont see any pressure signs going from mags to standards. if anything i'm pretty sure pressure will be less.

correct me if i am wrong.

last groups were jst under 3/4' at 100 and right at 1-1/4' at 200. not great, but it my defense it was windy. 1-1/4' high at 100 will shoot dead on at 200.
