270 Winchester ?

New to the forum, I have a Remington 700 chambered in 270 Winchester. I have had neck surgery along with radiation chemo. My shoulder is tender. I'm looking for a a load with light recoil. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

if you are wanting to hunt I would not "slow" em down,,,because they will not kill like they should and the trajectory will be like a snowball !!!!,,,,,I would try a large cal pistol ,,,that get the recoil into the hands and away from your shulder...Roger
PS....I see you are wanting to paper punch,,,well a 270 is not a target cal....I wold put the ole' 270 in mothballs and get a 6mmBR(dont give us the ole "I aint got the money" routine),,,,,recoil is minimal,,,accurach is world class,,,bullets from 50-107 gr ,,,perfect for vermin,,deer,,target,,what more culd U want,,,Roger
PSS,,,forgive the typo's ,,,I broke my neck on a 4 wheelr 6yrs ago and my hands and fingers are numb,,,I hope my advice helps you to enjoy shooting once you re-hab some more,,,

If purchasing a smaller caliber/ lighter bullet combo is out of the question, other options are muzzle brake or suppressor. Either and both reduce recoil pretty well. Suppressor does it and reduces decibels as well. Price of a suppressor would be about the cost of another rifle so kind of a toss up .

There is a load I got from Ken Waters pet loads that I loaded years ago that was very accurate and, I believe , just what you are looking for. It 110 gr Sierra CCI 200, 21 grs of IMR 4198. Case of your choice, and OAL to suit your rifle. My vel was 1754 ft/sec and sub moa accuracy. Recoil is non- existant.

I had a ruptured disk and cervical fusion surgery, and long after the operation shooting my .270 or any high power rifle caused neck pain and headaches. Your pain is telling you something.

I switched to a .22 rifle and the pain went away and I got out of loading all the brass. :)

Below painless .22 Savage fun and the barrel is threaded that lets you put a compensator on it for those brutal high velocity CCI Stingers.

The Savage compensator below will keep the bugs off the end of your barrel and you can tell the other people at the range you have a .22 Whizbang Magnum with a internal silencer.

If you use the 60 percent of max formula for H4895 recoil is much lower . You can start as low as 30 grains(60% of Max.) of H4895 for the 100 grain bullets . When I use this formula I usually start low and work up half a grain at a time until recoil or accuracy tells me what to do...seating depth dials things in after the charge is established.

Good luck, I hope you have a quick recovery.

Put a muzzle brake on your 270. A good brake will take most of the recoil out.

About 15% of maximum loads is as reduced I would use. Any less and case shoulders can be set back too far from firing pin impact. Full length sizing such fired cases may not push the shoulder backforward enough to prevent eventual head separation.

Yea, you can try reduced loads and muzzle brake but if you are primarily a paper puncher get a 223 Rem. Virtually no recoil, long barrel life, tons of rifle options available at reasonable prices, easy / cheap to load for, and lots of fun to shoot. My first choice would be a Tikka T3 in a 223 Rem or 243 Win.

I too have a spinal condition which is aggravated by recoil. I tried the reduced load and muzzle brake approach but wasn't happy with the results. It's like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. I now mostly shoot 223 Rem's and 243 Win's and enjoying shooting much more. Your health has to be the priority here.

What @daleboy said.... 60% rule with H-4895 and 90 gr Sierra HP = start at 32-33 gr and work up till you find the most accurate load. According to QL hocuspocus 32 to 33 gr of H-4895 under the 90gr Seirra HP would generate around 1,000 to 1,100 ft-lbs of muzzle energy.

I've used the 60% H-4895 on other cartridges and it's amazing how accurate reduced loads are with this powder.

For low recoil and accuracy get a bolt action in 223 or 6br. The 6br is/can be incredible in accuracy and is very easy to load for.

I have a loaded 270 win with Trail Boss, and while the bullet speed is quite reduced, so is the recoil; in fact there is pretty much no recoil at all. If you want a faster bullet velocity but still keep the recoil very mild, you can load with IMR 4198. It's a very fast burning powder not normally accociated with 270 win, but the recipe I used was for only 32.2 grains of powder for a 130 grain jacketed bullet. The latter is from the Lee Modern Reloading manual; the former, from Hodgdon's tables. Either way, you can shoot 270 all day without feeling any effects of recoil normally attendant to that caliber.

Oh, I almost forgot. You can use H4895 as a reduced load which will give you similar results to the Trail Boss. You can look up the H4895 reduced load data on Hodgdon's site.
