during the 1930's the SE deer population fed the locals, Ga had no deer or deer season until the 50's after the state purchased deer from Pa and put them in restricted areas to multiply,

today the limit is evidence to the wise decision to repopulate,

I know of a number of families whos grand parents live off game and what ever they could harvest. 22lr!!!

There will never be a winner here. Sounds like the old Ford vs Chevy debate, Well let me tell you my Dad had a Ford and, and, and. I think what matters to your opinion, it's where you grew up and when. In the east 35 rem. (thick woods) out west 270 (open flat), all around you can not beat a 30/30 post WW1, . then you have people with a military back ground 30/06. Apply more time and gun knowledge you get 257, 280, and 6.5/06. Not to mention Magnums. If it shoots good, kills clean, and you like it? go with it. Better yet everyone should one of each. Aren't guns great?

Don't get me wrong, I love and own a 270 and thinks it's a wonderful cartridge but, If I have to choose one cartridge that history has demonstrated as one of the most versatile and dependable I'll choose one of my 7x57 Mausers. They just don't get any better than the old Mauser.

I'll make this statement clear:

An elk cartridge starts with the number 3 and does two things; put one hole in and one hole out.

I don't know how my 6.5 SAUM pushing a 150gr Matrix dropped my elk DRT this year.

Would you be confident in taking a raking shot on a big bull running through the timber with this combo?

I have killed two big bulls at A DEAD RUN with a 7 mag, 140g Nosler Old style ballistic tip at 3200-one kicked twice, the other never even kicked. 150 yard-200 yard shots, bullet placement dead center of the body from front to back.

There was a muzzle break on the rifle, at the shot, I saw them stick their tongues out what looked like a foot, their front legs quit working, they plowed the ground with their noses. DEAD RIGHT THERE!!!

Bullet did not exit on the off side, guts were sloshing as I skinned them and QUARTERD them up.

I swear, you could not have picked a better combo, as my partner had jumped them, they were scared and running full out.

I do think that a lot of guys make a mistake in shooting too tough a bullet, elk are a lot easier to kill than a 240 lb white tail jacked up chasing a doe in heat! I shot cow elk with a 243 using 95g partitions.

A pard in Flagstaff shoots a 7 mag with 120g NON tipped triple shocks only, he might just whip your azz if you try and talk him into another bullet...mule man...does it all...modern day cowboy, packer, and shore nuff lion hunter.
