270 Winchester for Christmas

I am giving my 16 year old son a Kimber 8400 Clasic in 270 Winchester for Christmas. It will be topped with a new Leupold 4 x 12 AO scope. I will work him up some loads with 130 Swift Sciroccos for whitetails. If you have any experience with this caliber and these bullets I would like to hear what you have found out. I have had great success with Sciroccos in a .300Win Mag,.308Win, and a .243Win.

Happy Holidays

The 270 Winchester is the mother of all whitetail cartridges in my opinion. My son and I have killed deer with regular hornady, hornady sst, nosler bt, nosler sb,nosler partition, sierra boat tail, and speer flat base. I use the one that shoots best in the particular rifle and have used them all successfully on whitetails. The only qualifying remarks would be the partitions are a bit hard for whitetails and I wouldn't carry the ballistic tips into the woods where I could get 30 yard shot. I'd bet the Scirroco would be the best of all worlds but I haven't shot any.

Best powder choices are IMR 4350, IMR 4831, and H4831. I have no experience with H4350 but it should work great. A CCI BR primer works great with 4350. CCI 250 with IMR 4831 and Fed 215Match for H4831. Primers in my experience make a real difference in this cartridge.

I've had no luck in downloading this cartridge as I was want to do when my son was younger. The further I reduced the powder charge the less accurate it became.

I'd be glad to part with samples of some of these bullets and primers in exchange for a tour of your shop. I'm down the road in Wake Forest.

Tim and Others:

I loaded some 270 Win with 130 Sciroccos ahead of 60 grains or H4831SC and CCI BR2 primers. COL was 3.340. MV was in the 3150 range according to the Swift book. I did not chronograph them. After getting a 3" high sight in at 100 yards I did get a couple of 5 shot groups under .5. My son shot two bucks, one at 60 yards broadside. Entry wound was very small, the exit wound was 1.5 inches in diameter. The deer dropped in his tracks. The second deer was shot at 50 yards, frontal quarting shot. The bullet entered the upper brisket and exited the ribs at the diaphram rib juncture. The exit wound was about 8 inches long and quickly filled with bowel. This deer expired in 80 yards.

My son is very happy with his 270. We will refine some loads in the off season.

To my way of thinking 5 shots in .5 inch is outstanding. Speaks highly of rifle, load, and shooter. I don't think I'd change a thing.

TIM:

My son is 16 years old, 6'2", 195lbs. He has been shooting deer since he was 8 years old. I set him up with a model 7 with a youth stock in .243. He harvested a 512 pound black bear two years ago with a Remington 700 in 30-06 with 180 grain Nosler Partition. He then took over my .Model 7 .308 Winchester. He had been asking me for a 270 for three years. After seing a Kimber Super American at ourt SCI banquet he had his heart set on a Kimber. He wanted a wood stock. He has a Kimber 8400 Clasic. I wish he had gotten it in 30-06 but at least he can't bumm my shells.

Thanks for your input.

I've loaded 130 grain Scirocco's in my .270 Win with 58.3 grains of H4831 SC. This was from a Browning ABolt with a 20" barrel. I fired 3 shots for velocity and chronoed 2858 fps, then fired 3 shots for group, which measured .444". I've used them on whitetail only once, at 83 yards, and he hit the ground dead. Of course, at that range and with the placement, this wasn't unexpected.

Last week, I tested these bullets for velocity, from the same rifle, utilizing 59 grains of RL-22,a powder I've had great luck with in .270 Win), and they clocked 2946. This is a "book max" load from the Swift manual, and this velocity is pretty impressive coming from the 20" tube and 19F temp I had at the range that morning. I have not yet had the chance to fire them for group.

Mike:

I have found the Swift relaoding manual to be very conservative. Bill Hobert the Owner of Swift told me they used comouter software, I think QuickLoad) to develope their loading manual. I have several old Reoloding manuals and article by Jackm O'conner, and Bob Hagel. Both talke of loads that would be off the chart with the current manuals. Because of liability most loading manuals stop shrot of the reloading capabilities of the higher pressure cartridges. This is because every rifle and every barrel is different. I load for many clients. I personally shoot a .300 Win Mag in Remington 700. I have an aftermarket barrel on my gun. One of my customers has 2 .300 Win Mags in Remington 700. Both his have muzzle brakes and factory barrels. Both shoot the same velosity as my gun but with 1 full grain less powder. One must weigh accuracy and pressure signs to achieve the best load for a particular load. Bill Hobert explained to me how Swift had changed the alloy on the Schirocco II to a solfter more ductile combination. He also recomended that the Schirocco be jumped .030-.070 for beter accuracy. Hoberts expectations in the Schiroccos is 1.MOA. I find that they will shoot sub 1 MOA in every gun I have shot them in. I will say the larger calibers have been less trouble to work up loads.

Mike I would suggest you continue working up loads toward 60. to 60.5 grains with H4831SC. I think you will find a node in that area that will give you sub 1 MOA and a velosciy around 3150fps.
