I don't know what you need for "light" loads, as the recoil is not bad. This bullet is by far the favorite one in my rifle. I essentially mirror the Hornady Whitetail load for velocity. It is only 2971 (Wt is 2977). It is a half-moa load.
She shot a 20 ga with fieild loads for turkeys this spring , that very light mossberg mini bantam is probably a step up in recoil from what this 270 will be but i have a varmint barrel 22-250 she can start out with at 200 yds. I will probably have her rest the forend (and hold it!)of the 22-250 on the bench and have her stand behind the bench and blast away at the 200 yd plateBeen watching this thread and some comments for you to consider.
While we want our loved ones to also enjoy our sport and become proficient enough to take game at short to moderate distances, for them to do so requires time at the bench where unless great care is taken with managing recoil those with smaller frames/bulk bench work can be counterproductive to developing the accuracy skills required and overall confidence in a rifle.
A little story if I may:
A lovely young woman that comes here to shoot was loaned a 30-30 Trapper by her dad with a freshly fitted scope for her to zero in. Not scared of guns and recoil she set about the task only to get the shit kicked out of her until I passed by and spotted her struggles.
After loaning her my Caldwell bags and a towel to fold up and place between the butt and her dainty shoulder plus firm instruction to 'hold that fore end' I left her to it and later when returning the loaned items proudly showed off her 1.5 MOA group which for our NZ hunting is quite adequate to take deer at most of the distances we do here.
A year or so later she expressed an interest in getting her own rifle however past experiences with recoil had her a little gun shy (pun intended) of what caliber to select. As she lives just 15 mins away we told her to pop over and try a few rifles to see what level of recoil she could comfortably tolerate.
When that day came and armed with the knowledge of managing recoil at the bench we shot at blank A4 paper offhand (standing) at 40 yds knowing this was the least felt recoil technique that would effect her confidence.
One shot of each from 243W with 75 and 90gr loads, then 6mm Rem with 90gr, then 7mm08 with 120 and 140gr, then 308W with 130, 150 and 180gr loads. At no time did she know what she shot and from the offhand position never complained about the recoil of any load and after which I congratulated her and stated she could select any medium caliber within reason for her hunting needs.
So without yet disclosing what she had shot I asked if she had any particular caliber in mind and 7mm08 was on her radar and just a few weeks later we took her to an arms show where I knew a firearms company rep that shoots here would be present. Despite they were on a show special he cut her an amazing deal on a new 7mm08 Howa scoped and with a youth stock and from another show stand a pink camo sling completed the package. Happy as a dog with two tails she was.
1 MOA groups with Rem Core-Lokt's at our range a couple of weeks later and she was good to go.
Treat all lighter framed people with care when introducing them to rifles that recoil !
