270 Wby Magnum Process and Load Data

Good morning all and Merry Christmas.

I am new to the forum, but not the fundamentals of reloading as I routinely load for my 5.56 Bushmaster and Bergara in 6.5 Creedmoor. My questions are several-fold as I embark on reloading for my Kleingunther K-15 in 270 Weathby Mag. First, I need to purchase reloading dies for the round; Neck or Full Length?? Brand?? Secondly, my brass is once fired original Weatherby shot in the K-15. Third, is it possible to neck size only and “Bump the Shoulder” on this case? Fourth, I will be using Bergerger 140 VLD’s and will I need a special bullet seating die for this hybrid profile? Finally, any load data would be appreciated, especially if using IMR 4995, H4831 SC, et al.

All the Best!

Welcome to the forum.

I find using a standard set of dies first, such as Redding/RCBS/Lyman, as good a start as any.
With all belted mags I try to steer people away from neck sizing. The reason is that if your chamber is a bit sloppy, fired brass sometimes doesn’t fit back in easily and neck sizing won’t address this.
In my 270 Weatherby, I run Norma brass, it works ok as long as you don’t use really hot loads.
I use a Redding deluxe die set, it has a FL die, Neck die and standard seater die. I also have a RCBS FL die set with a modified seater plus for VLD’s. However, I have moved away from VLD’s and use Nosler 150gr Partitions exclusively. They just work right out to 500mtrs.
In regard to sizing, just use the FL die to bump the case back .002”.

Cheers.

^^^ Great advice and as said make sure to bump your case .002-003 and no more so as to headspace the case off the shoulder rather than the belt. If not then the cases will not last.

We use Full Length sizing dies to bump the shoulder 0.002"-0.003" but to do this we use a Headspace comparator to set up the sizing die.
Hornady makes the most popular headspace comparator.
H-4831 / H-4831sc is hard to beat accuracy wise. Hodgdon shows 68gr being MAX (Quickload concurs) in the 270 Weatherby with 140 gr bullet. Reduce a little and work up looking for best accuracy.
There are powder that will generate more speed than H-4831, but I personally would stick with H-4831 because it's temp stable and has proven accuracy. I prefer Fed-215 (or 215m) over other magnum primers.

A good friend approached me with the "I`m fixing to buy this rifle" how much can we build this 270 WBY for. It was a Weatherby catalog. I went to the back and figured it up with Stiller action, McMillan stock, Jewell trigger and told him I would only help if we ordered the reamer for the project, since he was handloading. I placed the reamer order through JGS, provided a sample round that I assembled with his choice of bullet the 140 NAB. No Weatherby freebore. When all said and done the rifle turned out great and the results on paper made it his favorite "go to" stick. He tried several powders and RL19 ended up the choice. HTH !

I split the reamer cost and it still only has 1 chamber cut. I MUST get myself a correctly tapered barrel to fit one of my stocks!! Ken at Brux said the offer factory Remington tapers, I must dig deeper.

This is excellent advise!

And to take it one step further, measure your case head to datum on new brass prior to firing, and after firing. You will be "shocked" at how much the shoulder is set forward. And if you set it back until the cartridge headspaces off the belt, this is what you will happen after a few loadings.

^^^^^ You will be shocked at the difference between the length(base to datum) between new and fire formed brass. I formed brass from new 300 Winchester brass for my 7mmRM so it would fit from the start. Factory ammo is from .017 to .022 shorter than my chamber but to resize it to get .002 shoulder bump I have to screw the die down to touch the shell holder. Confusing.
