.270 Loads for F-class

katokoch

250 or bust
Fellas,

While out shooting some today to celebrate the warm weather, I agreed to go to an F-class match or two with a buddy if he decided to (he is interested). He has a nice Remington 700 (Tactical .308) that shoots well already, but the only centerfire I've got is a Winchester 70 .270. I can do a couple of things with the stock to help me out, but I have no idea where to start with regards to load development (I am not a reloader). However, it is feasible to reload with him so I want to use it to my advantage. The rifle shoots well enough already (groups around 1" with Hornady ammo and simple rest), so I am willing to use it just a few times. I've got a Leupold 36x and Mueller 8.5-25x, so I've got enough glass.

Can anyone give me some ideas for starting points with basic components that would be best? Anything in particular I should be aware of with this round? The barrel is a 1 in 10" twist. I realize the .270 isn't too popular in target shooting because of a lack of good bullets, but I can suck it up and accept some shortcomings for the sake of having fun.

Also, if anyone shoots F-class at Elk River, please drop me a PM.

Thanks!

No one else has chimed so I'll throw this out. Sierra offers a target bullet in .270, a 135 gr Match King. Berger also offers 130, 140, and 150 gr VLD Hunting bullets. The 130's should be fine with the 1:10 twist, and should also be supersonic out to 1K yards. If you don't have a reloading manual, I would recommend one such as Sierra's. The JBM calculator can estimate some trajectories.......

Your hunting cartridge and rifle will be shooting in Open F Class against much heavier rifles and specialized target rounds and fanatical shooters. So go for it and learn all you can. :)

Edit: You reload, right ???

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't personally reload, but my friend that is interested in shooting F-class does and can I can use his equipment.

Shooting against the big boys will be fun.

Just got thru burning about 3#'s of powder thru my rem 700 .270 (bedded with trigger work otherwise bone stock 22" skinny barrel). load#1 remington brass, 52 grains reloader 19 powder, WLR primer, 150 sierra sbt= 2600fps average low .400 group size @ 100yds. Load#2 Winchester brass, 54 grains IMR4831, WLR primer, 150 Berger VLD, Jammed .015= 2800fps Low.500 groups @100 yds. Pushed the 150 grain bullets all the way to 3000 fps with no good results beyond 2800. Hope this helps!

While I've never tried to shoot 1000 yds with a 270, USUALLY the best performing bullets for a 1-10 are 135-140 gr. The 130's usually work out to a little better hunting weight because of the additional velocity. Try 58 grs of H4831 behind a 140 BT. Generally this will get you in the 3000 fps range if you have a 24" or longer barrel. Generally a very accurate load and I'm sure that it will be supersonic at 1K.

In my humble view the 140gr bullet is best for the 270. What little it gives up in velocity it makes up for in in BC and sectional density. That said, I shot in an F Class match last year and used a Rem 700 in 270win. with a Buriss 3-9x40 scope with BDC. The load was 140 gr Sierra BT Game King with 56gr H4831SC (IMR 4831@ 55.5 has worked well also). This rifle tries to shoot at .5 MOA and stays within .7 MOA. I was impressed with the Buriss scope I took off the caps and adjusted clicks just like a target scope. The lack of weight hurts but the set up but still did well. Bottom line is I had fun and impressed the other shooters. I now have a heavy Lilja barreled Rem 700 in a H-S Precision Varmint stock. The thing shoots .3 MOA with 56.6 grains H4831SC and 140 gr Berger VLDH. I used Win cases because experience is they just shoot better. Cases where trimmed, primer pockets cut uniformly and flash holes deburred. PS remember the 140 grainer hits harder and drops close to the 130.

Thee bullet to shoot in a 270 is the 165 Matrix ballistics VLD, some may have some stability issues in a 1-10 but it's worth shooting them to find out. I shoot at 5000+ft elevation and we run them in all our long range 270's.
I have yet to load a more accurate and easy to load bullet in a 270 cal, a G1 BC of .650 seems to be about where they are running, we push them 2800-2880 fps in 26+in barrels with H1000 or 7828. Also really like the 140 Bergers, but haven't loaded any since shooting the Matrix. Berger is coming with a 170 grain bullet with a G1 BC of .703 which will be outstanding from our 270 WSM's with a velocity in the low to mid 3000fps but it may be a bit heavy to take full advantage of it in a Win.

Been shooting 140's at just over 3,000fps for decades. They ignite deer to 600 yards (Hornady and Nosler) and also shoot .5's. It's a Winchester Model 70 and has been my favorite hunting gun for years. Tried it on gongs at 600 yards.

What fun as it shoots well there with only a 10 X scope. You get yours shooting and it should do well at 1,000.

140s worked best in my 270 as well. Nosler bts and Hornady SSTs were by far the best for accuracy. Ever gun is different and you'll have to work with charge weight, seating depth etc but I found best accuracy a few grains shy of max.
