.270 Deer Load

Anyone have suggestions for a .270 load for whitetail, 300 yards or less?

Son wants to try handloading for that cartridge.

Thanks

56 gr IMR 4831, rem brass, fed 210, 130 Speer hot cor. Shoots 3 shot clover leafs in a tikka T 3. Back off to 54.5 grains and work up.

IMR 4831 is one of the best powders for large capacity cases shooting relatively light bullets. It should work extremely well. RL-19 would be an excellent substitute for IMR 4831 (if you do not have any IMR 4831) with about 1.0 grain less powder..

H4350 and the Sierra 130 gr. Pro-Hunter. H4831 works however both of my .270's prefer H4350 for accuracy and velocity. Check reloading manuals for data.

I've had good results with Hornady, Speer, and Nosler 130 Gr bullets. IMR or H 4831 or 4350 works well. For a hunting load get no closer to the lands than .010". Make sure they will feed reliably from the magazine.

Work up to it because it is a MAX load but this has shot lights out in every 270 Win I have loaded for and that is quite a few. 60 grs H4831, Rem case, CCIBR2 primer and 130 Sierra game king or pro hunter. Really accurate and fast and kills deer BANG FLOP. I load them 10 thousands off the lands.

H1000 and Hornady 150SST. Worked good on a whitetail at close range. I set them to mag length. Most times I try to start .015" off he lands.

Don't have the powder specs in my mind, but the Sierra 140gr HPBT Gameking is the bullet for deer from a .270 IMO. I have harvested over 40 deer with it and all but TWO were DRT. I used the Sierra manual to start my loads and worked from there to get an acceptably accurate load. To make it clear for those that might wonder, I lived in Mississippi, and for most of the time that I lived there I could harvest 8 deer per year, more when I first moved there. I bowhunt also.

The 130 grain Ballistic Tip has proven to be super accurate in my 270. The classic load of 60.0 grains of H4831 has yielded an average velocity of 3030 fps and it puts whitetails down fast. The 130 grain Sierras also shoot with about the same accuracy. IMR 4350 and Reloader 22 showed excellent accuracy but I didn't chrono those loads. Pick a load that your rifle shoots well, it will kill deer!

Been using 140 Hornady Interlock or ST's with 55 gr. of IMR 4350 for decades. Just laid two nice does side by side at 225. Literally both on the ground, touching.

Many, many kills out to a bit over 500 yards with that combination and one rather large black bear also.

i use a ruger #1 in 270 win. i have two loads for it.

130gr nosler ballistic tip
imr4320 47.0gr
.3" at 100yards(3 shots)

150gr nosler ballistic tip
imr4350 51.0gr
.2" at 100yards(3 shots)

both work great, the 130gr seems to stay inside the deers lungs under 100yards. 150gr goes straight thru shoulder bones and all.

I have shot just about all the powders in the the .270 most of them shoot well but I have allways had very good luck with IMR4350 producing great accuracy and velocity..I think you cant really go wrong with a 130 or a 150 but most hunters do think the 150 dispatches deer a little better..I don't know I shot a ton with a 130 nosler BT. I also shot 500 ground Hogs one summer with the 130 NBT..back when they came in 100 box's and were 13.00 bucks a hundred..now that was pricy you could get other bullets for 9.00 bucks a hundred..But I got on the band wagon with the berger 150 VLD and have shot it for the last 5 to 6 years..I have only shot 3 deer with them, ah they seem to work as good as any good bullet. But I can not tell you how much IMR4350 I shoot behind the 150VLD but it is way faster than any book load, they shoot sub 1/2 moa in mine..I would have to say number wise the 150VLD is a tough bullet to out perform..but really the 270 any good bullet will work. But if you could get or have IMR4350 it will work as good or better than any other powder and with any bullet you want to shoot. The Hornady 150 interlock is a great killing bullet..you will drop more in their track with it especially at close range.

a lot of good info here..so I thought I would try a similar thread under the hunting post for 7mm WM..

45.2 grs. IMR 4320, Fed 210, 150 NBT. The circa 1967 M70 270 loves this load.

speed kills

110g tipped tripple shock
58g of Win 760
Rem 9 1/2
Seat the bullet .050 off the lands
1/2" groups
~3400 fps

110g tipped tripple shock
57g of H4350
fed 215
seat bullet .050 off the lands
5/8" groups
3350 fps

Sight in at 200, aim at the tops of their backs at 300
These loads were developed in a Ruger 270 All Weather boat paddle with leupold 3.5x10 AO

very, very accurate and effective deer/hog load, bullets DO NOT COPPER foul like the old Barnes do!

You can swap out to the 110g Pro Hunter and 110g Hornady HP with exact same point of impact! There is something magic about the 110g weight loads in a 270.

I don't think I have ever let a 110 grain bullet fly out the barrel of a 270....but I'll try anything once. Will be giving both these loads a try soon, thanks for posting!!! Info for the 270 never goes out of date, in spite of the fact that this is a 3 year old thread......by the way AckleymanII, what is a "Rem 1/2"?????

I use the 110 TTSX as a varmint and light game load out of 270's and it does well, on heavier deer or elk move to the 140 Berger or 165 Matrix, H4831 and 7828 has been our go to.

Whatever you do, try the Barnes bullet. With 100% pass thru in 27+ years using them , I have seen over the years less blood shot meat than any other bullet, as long as you hit to the rear of the lungs. You will be amazed at that one nice hole thru the animal and quick kills. I shoot 140's exclusively in my 284 and practice with the cheaper Speer 140's.
