.270-.300 Weatherby

Anyone heard of this before? I work with a guy who knows a guy....

Anyways, apparently this is quite a gun to shoot and the fella who owns it is letting it go cheap. Going to look at it tomorrow but was wondering if this cartridge is something to steer clear of.

Thanks.

Page 170 of P.O. Ackley's handbook,Vol II) describes this cartridge. Doesn't sound like he was a fan of this chambering. Looks like a major barrel burner. Also, velocities Mr. Ackley achieved with this cartridge were only marginally higher than the standard .270 Winchester. There is such a thing as overbore, after all.

Long/short: if that rifle has been used much at all, it is very possible that the bore is already roasted.

Could be why it's so cheap.

We will see.

Thanks.

I'll echo what Tommie says. I always suspect a hot-rod chambering when the rifle comes up for sale. There's usually a good reason that the owner is getting rid of it, and that reason's usually because the throat is toast. Don't rely on an eyeball inspection of the barrel. Get it to someone who has a borescope and knows how to use it before you commit.

.300 Win is an excellent cartridge. One of my personal favorites.
Heard good things about the 7mm /300 WM which makes sense in that the .300 brass is higher capacity than the 7mm Rem.
I never thought .270 was a better caliber than the 6.5 mm or the 7 mm. Better bullet selection in the Ln the 6.5 and 7.

There are a LOT of rifles for sale this time of year. I'm looking to pick one of these ugly ducklings up and use it for a donor rifle. With a new custom barrel you can have any chambering you want. Take a look at the "Gun Broker" and
"Auction Arms" sites. The selection is amazing.

Google Wildcat Bullets. The are out of Canada and make heavy for caliber rebated boattail VLD bullets. I know they make 169.5 gr .277 bullets. Kirby Allen makes a line of overbore cartridges and uses these bullets and speaks very highly of them.

Well done aixenmemphis,

I had not heard of Wildcat bullets.
They really do have a fine selection of .277 bullets.
I read their balistic theory with great interest.
Perhaps even more interesting is their selection of .25
bullets as I am warming up to the idea of a 25 wssm project.
