260AI roll call

I'm really liking this N555 powder. Shot a 3x1000 today, took first in F/Open and missed overall by 3 points.

This load held a really tight waterline. Winds were light but very flukey with very sudden gusts and let-offs. 3rd match I just couldn't get a handle on the wind, was getting tired and shot more confirming 9's than I really should have.

Edit: target pic is first string and the low shots were the sighters.

Let's talk trimming. I know we all love that we don't have to trim every firing or even much at all, however it still needs to be done on occasion. I currently trim using a modified Lee Case length gauge and drill but I would like to switch to a bench trimming station thats powered to speed up my process and use one handed while sizing the next case during dwell time.

I've looked at the Ugly trimmer but would still need to power it, I've heard good things about the Lyman and 3-way cutters are available. Shoulder referenced would be ideal. What is everyone else doing?

I haven't found anything I prefer over the Lee gauge and a drill. Thats the only way to go in my book.

Shot a 3x600 match today. Was going to bring my sling gun, but I didn't have enough brass formed so loaded up the trusty 260AI with 153.5 Bergers.

Had 10-12kt steady winds that had some big drop-offs and sneaky directional changes. Guys shooting 6's and light 30's (Palma) were getting blown around +/- 2 minutes, and those not paying attention got bit a few times.

593-28x score was enough for 1st in F/Open, 3 points behind MW, who was also shooting a 260AI with 140 Hybrid. 596-30x MW 595-32x F/TR

Current load:
260AI
Peterson SRP brass 11x fired
Berger 153.5
Vihtavouri N555 45.00-45.02gr
Rem 7-1/2 primer
2810fps avg
5.5 SD

Very nice. What barrel length and altitude?

I agree. I have a couple 6.5x47s, a Creed and a 6.5PRC, they’ve all been good rounds. Funny how hype works, we showed up with the PRC and Creed a few months ago on an Aoudad hunt and the guide, who’s a good friend, wasn’t too excited about seeing my wife with a 6.5 creedmoor. We only carry one rifle when we hunt together and since the Creed is the one she likes the most it’s what we had when shooting a pair of Aoudads the next day at just over 600 yards at a 29 degree angle. Both were one shot kills using 142 LRABs. He has had a couple bad experiences with Creeds, he’s a great guide but doesn’t get into rifles like some of us - we changed his mind a little that day. Shot placement. I never did get a chance to use the PRC, not yet anyways.

I get where the hate comes from on the Creedmoor though, I think it gets old hearing about it and some of the comments that come with it. No matter what your feelings are, Hornady did a masterful job marketing that one. I have a soft spot for the 6.5x47 personally, I really like that case.

I’m hoping this 260AI becomes my new go to in the 6.5s! With the 22” proof barrel it should work well with a can and the back country.
excellent shooting

Can anyone supply me with the water case capacity of a 260AI using necked down 308 Lapua LR brass. I have a ton of this brass and was thinking of barreling up a 260AI to use with heavy bullets in F-Class. I would like to run things through QuickLoad to think about it first. Thanks for any info I can get.

My average case capacity for Peterson SRP which is a bit less than lapua 260 brass is 56.4gr H20.

Edit: I do have a bunch of Lapua 260 brass thats shot out I can measure tomorrow if you like, too.

But, what bullet are you planning to shoot? Collectively we have a bunch of data we all can share to get you close once fully formed.

Fire forming, 44gr H4831 under any 130-144gr bullet is really accurate and does a good job. 42.5gr H4350 works too but is a bit more picky between guns it likes.

Good morning. I am planning to shoot a 162 grain VLD bullet that I used to shoot from a 6.5-284 Win. I don't want to use that case anymore and want to go to a smaller case hence the 260AI case. I have a lot of Lapua 308 match cases and don't mind the work to neck down and turn the brass necks. That is why the specific case request. However, as I am still in the thinking stage I haven't bought a set of dies. My other alternative is a 6.5 x 55 AI but then i need dies and brass.

When cleaning my rifle last night I thought I would check it out with the bore scope because it has a little over 1200 rounds through it now. Its been shooting fantastic still and I'm leaving later today for the Western States Regional long range championships so hopefully it keeps it up for another ~200 rounds, lol!

I have been planning on about 1500-1600 accurate rounds at 1000y from this barrel, but will let the target tell me when its done. This is strictly an F/Open gun, for a hunting gun i would easily expect acceptable accuracy 2x that number.

This is a Kreiger 1:8 @ 29.75"

This is a bit of a carbon ring at the end of the chamber. Brush on a short rod chucked in a drill takes care of it.

This is the lead, still looking good and well defined, minimal erosion and I have not changed my seating depth.

This is about 7" past the case mouth. I'm not concerned about this amount of fire cracking and there is no copper build up. It still shoots great but its time to get another barrel spun up so its ready and waiting when this one craps out. I will fire form brass in it once it goes south.
