260 vs 308

does anyone have both of these calibers whats you thoughts on them. what would be the best over all best caliber for varmints & deer in the AR platform?

I don't think the deer or large varmints will know the difference. They are both excellent choices. Smaller varmints don't need either cartridge. I would opt for the .308 due to the availability of ammunition. I like my hunting rifles to be chambered in a cartridge that I can find at the local Walmart. The .260 is not as readily available in most places. Recoil is slightly less in the .260 but in the heat of the moment I doubt you will notice.

Interesting question. Obviously both cartridges are very capable for deer and both might be considered overkill for varmints (assuming you mean coyotes, feral dogs, wolves. maybe chucks?). I don't have a .260 AR but several .308 AR's. Out to any reasonable range, they perform real well. The recoil from an AR-10 in either caliber would not be a factor in quick follow up shots. I guess I would lean towards the .308 just because of a broader selection of bullets and factory ammo. I don't think anything you hit with either cartridge will know the difference.

Been leaning toward the 260 but this not an easy choice the 308 does have it positives over the 260 just like the guy said above but i think the 260 is a little flatter shooting and i do reload i guest i will just have too make a choice. the 308 is hard to beat though.

Personally I'd go with the 260. Felt recoil is about 20 percent less than the 308 thru all bullet weights. Both calibers are excellent for deer size animals and a little heavy for small varmints. Remember it's not always what you hit 'em with but where you hit 'em that counts.

I'd skip the 260 in the AR and go 6.5 creedmoor (I know because I did). both perform well, but the 6.5CM was designed out of mag feeding and my AR does very well with the 142 SMK. (1:8.5 twist)

The 308 is what the AR10 was designed for. It works very well with many loadings but if you mag-feed plan on 175gr (ok, maybe the Hornady 178) or lighter bullets. The 190-240 benefit from seating long in order to get more velocity, but won't fit the mag that way.

Between the two, (I have both) I love them both and my choice would come down to the other considerations such as powder, bullets, brass... Technically you can get one, and with a barrel swap, go to the other. Of course, why do that when you can have another upper to pin on?

I think the good ole 243 would work wonders. to me some calibers benefit from a bolt gun over a gas gun, I have a 308 ar and I think it is nice but as far as 260 id want a bolt. maybe a custom 6x47L Ar

I got both in bolt guns... very different rounds... the 260 is faster and flatter by all means. The 260 is half the recoil easy in my rifles shooting 140 6.5s and 155 30 cals...

260 is better at longer ranges... 308 will do it too with more doping in... my 260 trajectory curve seems to be almost half of what the 308 is. The 260 gets to 1000 yards way easier.
