260 Rem

Hey guys ,

Anyone out there have any experience with a standard 260 Rem with a 22 " bbl . I am wondering what kind of velocity with acceptable accuracy, 1/2 to 3/4 moa ) can be expected with bullets in the 130 gr range . I have a wide range of powders so any advive in that area woulkd be appreciated as well I want to use the 130 Berger VLD

The rifle in question is a Remington titanium , first model 5.25 lbs ) and will only be used for sheep out to 4-5 hundred max.

Thanks , jim b

I have not tryed the Berger 130 VLD but the Hornady 129 interlock and the SST with Varget are super accurate. My Rem 700 has a 9 twist barrel and likes everything 130 and below. With 95 vmax will shoot .5" groups at 200 yd. Great all around rifle. Wade

UMP and Dennis ,

Thanks for the input . Would you mind sharing load info ? Also what length bbls are you all using . And finally , would you happen to know the velocities ?

thanks again, Jim B

jimm,

Rem 700, 22" Rock barrel.

130 grain Accubonds run 2915 fps.

120 Ballistic Tips run 2975 fps.

H-4350 is a good powder but H-414 gave a little better groups and more velocity with both bullets. R-19 didn't show any promise. I'd give some 120 Triple Shocks a go too.

Alf ,

Thats what I'm talking about !! Thanks a ton ! I will use that info to develop a starting point on powder choice .

I realize reluctance on folks part about giving out load data that is near max or maybe just a smigde past : ) BUT ! I dont plan on starting my load development anywhere near those carefully developed " safe in your gun " loads . Several grains below them and my ladder test will point the way as I go .

So , how much powder are you using to get the results you shared . ?

thanks agin , jim b

Jimm,I built a 260 on a Mauser action with a 24" a&b barrel.Out to 600 yards with a 140 a-max 49 grains of H1000 win. large rifle primer it will kill a metal plated pdog very consistently. It's not as fast as some other powders but it will do the job.

Jim: I have .260 Ti and found no joy with the heavier bullets. Finally settled on Nosler 100g Partition. Also, b/c of the light barrel, I had to shoot my strings slow. I'm in the lead-free zone, so I have to go back to the drawing board this spring.

Grand ,

Thanks for you input , actually thanks to all that have chimed in with teir experience .

Did you free float the bbl or leave it with the " pressure point " on the end of the stock ?
Maybe you should just get the heck out of the " lead free" zone . : )

If you find a range where you can shoot regular lead-core bullets try the Lapua Scenar 123s with a near-max load of H4350. This load, running around 2950 fps has proven extremely accurate for many .260 Rem shooters, yours truly included. Try both .020" jumped and .010" in the lands. My barrel preferred to jump the 123s but YMMV.

The Sierra FB 100 grain "varminter" bullet is also extremely accurate.

since those with 260 experience are chiming in, would that be a good caliber for a tactical build? say a 22 to 24' barrel on a rem 700 action?

The 260 is a great tactical round. I started off shooting the 308s then went to the 260s and then to the 6.5x284s. The 6.5x284s were just to hard on barrels for tactical shooting so I went back to my trusty 260s but went with the 123 Lapuas instead of the 140s and just love it with that bullet.

I build the rife with a 26' barrel and then have it set back after about 2000rds to a 24' barrel. Go with a 260 an you won't hardly shoot your 308 anymore.

If you want to try the 123 scenars Sniper Central sells the HSM factory ammo. I have used their stuff out of a Savage 10 with a Shilen 26' 1x8 4c Savage varmint contour barrel. It is like shooting laser guided ammo. Very accurate, light recoil and very reasonably priced.

I've been using 140gn sierra game kings in my kimber Montana for mule deer and elk. 39.5 gn varget and a WLR primer only fly at 2720 fps average but it shoots 1' groups at 200 yards and kills everything I point it at. It is fast becoming my favorite hunting rifle. All this and it weighs only 6lb 3oz loaded with scope and everything.
