260 rem with 30" barrel

What velocity are you getting with 140 or 142s? I am thinking about upgrading my 26" to a 30" barrel to hopefully gain additional velocity. I am getting about 2800fps now. Any chance I get up to 2900fps with a 30" barrel?

With a 30" barrel and Re22 or H4831 SC, there should be no problem to go over 2900. Use Rem cases or necked up Win cases in .243 with molycoated bullets and Fed 210 Gold Medal primers and start with 42 grains of both powders and progress carefully with compressed charges of about 45-46 and you should reach your goal with safe pressures.

For years I shot a 260 in mid and long-range competition using both 142SMK's and 140 Berger VLD's out of a 30" Krieger barrel. My rifle liked H-4831sc but a lot of others prefer 4350. You can't go wrong with either one. I used Remmy cases and Winchester LR primers. The rifle/load was very accurate and I won a lot of matches with it. However, velosity has never been as high as some say they are getting. With a STIFF load of 4831 I get right around 2730fps with the 142SMK's. This load is very accurate and still supersonic at 1K. What more could you ask for?

Good shooting, Jim

Nosler .260 brass, 142SMK, CCI BR-2, Krieger 30" HV 1-8, 45.2 Re19 2955fps. Holds the record at 500 yard at our club 200 17X, but after 75* is too hot a load!

I honestly don't think you really gain all that much with a 260 and a 30" barrel. The case is just not big enough to really get the advantage of the 140s. You have to push it to the max with 4350 or 4831 to get the velocities your wanting and thats really hard on brass.

The other draw back is that sometimes the 260 will not shoot well at the higher velocities when using a powder like RL 17 or one of the others that will get it up in the range you want.

I have found they shoot the best in the 2800 to 2850+ range and then thats pushing them in my opinion. If yoiu want the velocities that your looking for I would go with a 6.5x55 or the 6.5x284s they are both deadly accurate and will shoot where you want to go.. Good luck in your quest!!

try H4350 with 142/140. if 142 [tangent ogive] seat on or back off lands. if vld [secant ogive] jam at least .015 in.

FWIW - i use h4350 [42.2] with 142 smk and get 2920 fps. h4350 [43.3] with 140 vld [berger] and it really snaps [chrono is down] believe it's about 3000.

habu

p.s. i shoot a 6.5x08 HABU - .296 neck and neck size with a .290 bushing. - no 'soft' seating - had bad exp.
