260 rem or 6.5 Creedmoor?

Looking to rebarel my Rem 700, 308 win to a 6.5 . The Creedmoor is relatively new to the sporting rifle market and right now it looks like only Ruger and Savage are chambering it. Thought instead I would use my Rem 700. Anyone have any hunting experience with either cartridge? Creedmoor brass only has one producer which is Hornady, ammo seems to be the same. The 260 is more abundant and Lapua is making brass for it also. I am leaning towards the 260 but would like some other input. Need more data.....

If using a 2.8" box, the CM has some advantages, but if you go with a Wyatt box, that is pretty much negated. John Barsness did an article on the CM a few years back and was able to form brass by fireforming 22-250 brass with fast burning powder, cream of wheat, and a patch to top it off. If you do decide on the .260, I do recommend the Wyatt box and having your chamber throated so you can make use of the extra mag length with VLDs, etc.

If you go 260, think about an AI. It fireforms with usable performance and then literally stops brass from stretching. Performance is not the big issue but that brass stretch is. I use all Lapua brass for my 260AI with multiple loadings and no issues. Many use the 260 Ackley Improved cartridge for long-range target work here also.

I have both, and they will hammer!!!!! but I would go with the 260 Rem just because of brass. I just bought a butt load of 7mm-08 and re-sized it and it works great!

Plus I`m putting together a 260 Rem "hunting rifle" because the 260 I have is little heavy to carry in the woods...

and the Creedmoor aint light either..

but they`ll shoot! either way you go a 6.5 round is hard to beat!

I've tried a couple Creedmoors that were Savage factory guns . And to be totally honest they shot great !

But ......................... they belonged to other folks who were kind enough to let me try them . Now with that being said in each instance I am quite sure I was shooting their pet loads .

Now on the other hand I've had experience with the 260 Remington ever since they legitimized the cartridge . And over the course of almost 20 years of messing with the cartridge I've owned several rifles and two bolt action handguns chambered for the round . And every one of them shot well for it's intended use .

I've still got the first little stainless Remington Model 7 in 260 I bought when the guns first hit the market . And after ALOT of rounds on paper and deer that thing will still shoot 1/2 MOA if I hold the gun correctly . And thats with hunting loads I might add !

The .260Rem is about the best whitetail cartridge that has ever been produced, particularly for a person that handloads. Recoil is mild and accuracy is very good. It has enough energy all of the way out to 400yds to put the hurt on any whitetail that ever walked provided you can make a solid shot. Another point is that you can find .260Rem ammo at any large store. Not so for the Creedmoor.

I changed over from a 308 to a 260 for tactical rifle matches and love the 260. The recoil is less and it shoot's flatter then my 308. I plan on rebarreling my 308 to another 260 .

Go with the 6.5x55 and don't look back ;)

I like the Swede well enough also !

But I still like the 260 MORE !

The Creedmoor seems okay as well .

But the ones I really wanna try now are the 6.5x47 Lapua in a bench gun and the 6.5x57 in a more deer hunting configured gun !

Both on Model 700 actions of course !

I had my choice of either and went with the .260. Either cartridge can hunt A-OK....its what you shoot it out of that can hinder you. Info on reloading is much more .260 orientated, so if I intended it to be a hunter...again....260 would be my way to go.

I have shot thousands of rounds of both in tactical competitions and practice and they are virtually identical in terms of velocity.

I prefer the creedmoor because it is a more efficient design - less of the bullet intrudes on the case capacity - its basically a shortened 260 AI.

But it really is a coin toss and a matter of personal preference.

A good friend of mine owns several .260's for hunting purposes and has never complained. I too am in the market for a 6.5, not for hunting but a nice tactical rifle and I can't see any reason to go with anything but the .260. Brass is easy since its .308 based and it seems to be very easy to find a good load for any purpose.

In my 40+ years of deer hunting I've taken well in excess of 200 deer . I also keep a ledger/journal of date time distance cartridge scope and load .

The 260 cartridge is maybe a dozen ahead of it's next closest competitor in number of kills !

My records indicate I've taken about 3 dozen with the 260 REM . And the funny thing is that I've not killed anything with it in the past 8 years !

My records indicate the Nosler 125 Partition pushed with 46 grains of IMR4831 and lit with a CCI200 primer are the deer killer in my little Model 7 !

Just may have to break it back out this year just for fun and old times sake !

If you choose a .308win variant you will never lack for handloading brass.

That said, I decided to rebarrel to 7mm-08 from .260rem. Also own a 6.5x55 which is very versatile, but the 7mm-08 just has more going for it. More bullet choice. Gives up nothing in the BC dept and lots more weight variety. Not looking to shoot the tightest groups. Also interested in Cast Bullet options and there are more in 7mm than 6.5mm.

Whatever you choose, give serious thought to building on a Long Action platform if you want to utilize heavy or VLD bullets with greatest efficiency.
