260 rem for comp?

Hi Austin the 260 would be verry good for your intended purpose as it will reliably shoot quality match type projectiles to 1000 yards dut up to 600 yards it is verry good. I would look at the 260AI if you are rebaraling not only for extra velocity but for brass stability the 40 degree shoulder cases do not streach as much and are more accurate you couls also look at a 30 degree shoulder version.

Good choice go for it

Thank you.I am thinking of going with a 26" barrel. What twist should I use for what bullets. What barrel maker would you suggest.

Hi go with an 8 twist as you can stabalise any match projectile aswell as hunting bullets i usualy start with Sierra as they are verry relable and usualy work well in most barrels. Have a look here http://www.6mmbr.com/barrels.html any reputable maker should be great for you the broughten canted land barrels are verry well spoken about at the moment here is their site http://www.rifle-barrels.com/ they are called 5c or go with any manufacturer your gunsmith prefers as long as they are Quality.

For a first choice in Projectiles the 107gr 6.5mm MatchKing is awsome to 600 yards with a small case like a 260 rem and the 120gr is very accurate but not quite as efficient in the wind. for the longer ranges the 142gr Sierra and H4350 is hard to beat in a 26" barrel. You can also try Varget with the 107gr bullets. Another option for hunting is the 140gr Hornady A Max the plastic tip makes them fairly explosive like a ballistic tip but i have had some bad experiences with them for accuracy in target shooting in the 260 or 260AI they will be fine for hunting and may even be ok for your target shooting. for brass use Lapua 243 cases and neck them to 6.5 in one operation with a tapered expander button. Match rifle primers from CCI or Federal primers will work well also. seat the projectiles 10 thou into the lands to start with and they should still extract without trouble. The only thing you have to do is to choose weather to go with a 260 or a 260AI or a custom called the 6.5 Redding,6.5/243 30 degree shoulder) the redding has the advantage of the brass stability of the AI case and slightly better feeding. Although the AI can sometimes be a bit harder to feed in a well set up Remington they feed flawlessly.

Thanks Wild Bill.I will start figuring out what I want to do then build it.What is your opinion on barrel length.

I dig the 6.5 mm cartridges for targets and hunting. I use a 260 Rem in a Model 70 for Highpower and a CZ 550 in 6.5X55 for edible targets.

I am a big fan of Lapua Scenar bullets. That's all I load for Highpower in my 260. I use the 123 gr for 200 and 300 and the 139 for 500 and beyond. 42.5 grains of H4350, Remington cases, and Federal 210M primers for both bullets. About 2800 fps with the 123s and 2700 for the 139s.

My Model 70 wears a 28" Krieger.

I just had a .260AI built by Patriot Arms. Go with at least a 26" barrel, if not longer.
