260 Rem cases whacked

I had a Savage LWH with an oval chamber...sold it. I bought a Savage 16 in 7mm08 , the first 4 " of rifling look like someone ran a tap into them. I had a Criterion 260 Rem come in and put it on the 16. I use headspace gauges and all is good. New Lapua 260 brass chambers fine. I full length resized the brass from the oval chamber to the same headspace as the new Lapua's and it will not chamber. Mic brass , neck good , body above rim good. Could the shoulder angle be off ? Puzzled.

One potential explanation:

Case length is too long.

Another:

Your original 260 chamber (oval) was overly generous, your new 260 chamber is minimum.

Your FL die isn't as tight as your new chamber (and could still be within SAAMI specs). It's sizing your bloated brass, but not enough.

Just two guesses.

Do the fired (formerly new) Lapua cases size correctly?

Savage really does have a barrel problem. They are easy to make shoot just change to an aftermarket barrel. I would throw out that old brass it isn't worth it. If you had a small base die you might bring them around.

Lapua is new in box unfired. Sad about factory barrel quality, but for less than the cost of a custom action I have a whole gun , with a hand lapped match grade barrel.

I suspect your headspace measuring technique is not as precise as you need. What happens if you bump the shoulders back another couple of thou?

Also, use a marker to paint a case that won't chamber. Cycle the bolt on it as far as it will go a few times, then pull it out and see where the ink is removed. Often, that'll show the problem very easily.

A lot of times if the previous chamber is much different from the new one, there is too much spring back in the brass and it will never chamber unless you get creative and oversize at least once (surface grind a shell holder down .010" or so.)

Resize all of the old brass, and then refit the barrel to the brass instead of a gauge - it will work fine.

Headspace= Closes on Go Gauge , will not close on Go Gauge + scotch tape. Go Gauge mic at -.003 in RCBS Precision mic. Size brass to - .004 on Mic . Scotch tape =.002 .

colored case neck , shoulder , and base above extractor groove. The base above the the groove scrubbed off. Do they even make small base 260 Rem dies ?

I don't really follow you, here.
