260 rem and Wilson dies

I just fired my 260 rem with factory Federal ammo. When i got home to try the new Wilson neck die, the case would not go all the way into the die. The last 1/8" of the case was sticking out. Only about 3 of the 20 fired case would go all the way into the die. Has anyone else had this happen? I do have some new Lapua brass for this rifle Tikka super varmint 260 rem, but im just waiting on a tap to make a modified case for the Hornady LNL comparator before i start reloading the lapuas.

I got the tap from a shooting supplier in QLD. Im in Australia. And i fixed the die by painting a case with a black marker pen and inserting it into the die. Then when i pulled it out i could see where it was pouching and with a dremel tool i ground the high spots down. Now all cases fit properly.

A Wilson neck die it just that, it only sizes the case neck.
With a factory rifle, you will need to resize the case body befor using a neck die.
Recomend using a full length sizing die and bump the shoulder back about .001" for reliable
chambering.

Why spend the money on a modified case to check bullet seating depth to rifling lands when you have
a cleaning rod?

Gday JW,
I have Wilson neck dies for my 308 6ppc and 204. I have never had this problem with either of the other calibers. A few of the once fired 260 cases( factory Federal ammo)would go all the way into the die and some wouldn't. When i painted a case that would not go in, and tried to insert it when i pulled it out it was touching about 10mm into the die. It was not touching the case shoulder at all. After i ground down the sidewall a bit, the case went straight in sitting flush with the bottom of the die. And all this is without a bushing in place. So now when i place a bushing in, the bushing will stop the case mouth till i push it home with the arbor press.

I have never had to full length size any brass yet except for my 30-30. I never have a problem opening the bolt after firing.

To me, the cleaning rod method is the same and the split case mouth method of finding the lands, its not very accurate. I tried the split case neck method 10 times and got 10 different measurments. All very close but none the same. I'll try the modified case and see if its any more accurate.

Drill the the primer hole about 3 or 4 thou blcck tape on on stoney point tool mark case works good.
