260 Barrel Length

What would be an reasonable estimate for velocity gain between a 26 inch barrel and a 28 inch barrel both chambered in 260 Remington? The velocity for the 26 inch barrel is 2700 fps.

The 260 is used in a wide variety of shooting disciplines. Both Powder burn rates and bullets weights varies as do velocities.

Example 1. 20"-26" barrels used for hunting and tactical use.
Example 2. 26" - 30" barrels used for cross the course shooting
Example 3. 28"- 32" barrels used for longrange prone and Fclass.

I have hunting customers using 20"-26" with #3, #4, #5, and #6 sporters shooting 120-130 grain bullets 3,100 fps.

I have longrange prone shooters and F class shooters shooting 139 -142 grain bullets 2850 - 2950.

Again powder burn rates, bullet weights and barrel lengths can change the 260 dramatically.

The 260 is popular for a number of reasons, first is is a factory loaded round, second it adds 100 fps to the 6.5 Creed more and 6.5/47, it adds 200-400 rounds of more barrel life than the 6.5/.284.

Just last week cut my 260AI down from 26" to 24". Using 140's and Reloader 22, I lost 50 fps - 25 fps per inch.

Having both a 260 and 6.5 Creedmoor, I haven't really seen any "factory loaded" 260 ammo other than hunting ammo from Remington and Federal (FGMM has been a unicorn for 3+ years now and I don't count offerings from small boutique shops) and I certainly haven't seen close to a 100fps velocity delta from a 26" barrel.

The 260 does have a bit more boiler room, but to really take advantage of it you'd have to load so long that you're relegated to a single shot or maybe long action repeater.
