.260 AI Please educate me.

I`m considering building a .260 AI for long range rock chuck shooting.

Looking at the 120 Nosler Ballistic tip.

ANYTHING you can tell me would be of great help

Best powders to try?

Freebore used,if anyone else is specifically set up for this bullet.

Velocity attained with the 120 gr bullet

Anything else you deem helpful.

Thanks,

Phil.

i have had a number ofAI and the only one to dissapoint me was the 260, did not get that much velocity improvement, not as accurate at 280AI, 7-08 AI which both shot into the .300's with good velocity improvement over std. i dumped the 260AI

7-08ai, 6mmAI, would be my preferance

The 260 AI is probably one the best 6.5 to ever build .Rl 22 H4831 short cut H4350 my preference is Norma MRP with 28 '' plus barrels. 30'' barrel with 140 gr Berger bullets MRP powder runs 3030.50' or less the 6.5 284 with 10 gr less powder

I've pondered this move quite a bit. I've got a 243 Ackley and a std 260 Rem. I don't think the Ackley is worth the bother. Limited gain and needs a whole new set of dies. I got a custom full length resize die for the Ackley from Hornady and that's worked well, but unless you own the reamer and plan to do it again and again, I don't see the point.

To go faster than the std 260 Rem, get a bigger std cartridge is my recommendation.

Have fun.

from what i have learned - the only way 260ai gets any worthy increase in velocity is will a lonnnnng bbl and slow pdr packed full, problem when going after hogs. not worth the trouble

my7-08ai goes 3040fps from a 24" tube with 140grainers a 120 would cook.

I have one with a 28 inch cbi barrel. It is fast and accurate. For a true SA cartridge it is pretty impressive. Mine loves 47.5 grains of H4831sc and a berger hybrid. Nets around 2920 fps with no pressure. I took it out prairie dog blasting last year and got some long hits. I shoot 600 yard matches with it as well using 42 gr of H4350 at around 2800fps. Its slightly more accurate and less harsh on the barrel. I think the biggest advantage of the ai is the lack of case growth. If you're like me and hate trimming brass then you would love an ackley. Ps. Lee collet dies work well on ackleys and are cheap.

28" PacNor, 260Imp30, 140 Berger Hybrids & VLDs @ 2950fps, no pressure issues, no need to trim cases, 5 shot groups under 1"ctc at 300m with fireforming and formed brass. What's not to like? (OK, shorter barrel life maybe)
