.250 savage model 98 mauser

I am working on loading this .250 savage. I would like to use it on whitetail deer hunting. Using a 100 grain bullet what powder would work well? Thanks.

I use H4895 in a Savage 99 1915 vintage.

Work up to it, Sierra 4th edition used a 98 Mauser 24" barrel to do their work up. They list as a suggested hunting load, a MAX load, of 35.3 grs IMR 4064 with their 100 gr bullet for 3000 fps. They used a Remington case and a Rem. 9 1/2 primer COAL 2.515 . That should smoke a deer.

The 250 savage is a great deer round, my son and I have killed upwards of 30 deer with 100 grain Nosler partitions and 87 grain Speer soft points. I have had best performance with IMR4064 and reloader 15. I have also used IMR3031, it works well also.

Varget works well, too. Varget and 4064 tend to work well in the same applications.

Try Xbr 8208 and Imr 4064. Mine shoots 3/4" groups 100yds with 4064 and 100gr sp. Not tried it with xbr yet. But shoots like a champ with 37gr xbr and 75gr vmax.

IMR 4064 has always provided excellent results with 100gr and less bullets. The 100gr Sierra Gameking and 87gr Varminter have always shot really well.

With 100grain bullets it likes 34.4 of 4895 in my Mauser.

I have never heard of 4898 but Butch Lambert would be the last guy on earth I would like to start an argument with! He probably meant 4895. I vote for Imr 4064. Gary

Depending when it was built, who put the barrel on it, it çould be a 1-14 twisted barrel. I worked up loads for commercial mauser rebarreld with a Buhmiller barrel in 250-3000 that had a 1-14 twist same as the Savage barrels at the time. Quite accurate with 87s but the only 100gr that would work remotely we was a stubby Rem flatbase SP.

I use Varget for 87gr or H4350 for 100gr.
