250 Savage AI

I recently got the opportunity to purchase a few rifles from an old lady whose husband had passed. He had a very nice collection with a lot of old 700 BDLs with the black tip and nice wood stock. Some of them were all factory mint condition and some were very tastefully rebarreled with matching bluing, bedded, trigger jobs on the factory Remington triggers, etc. I bought a custom 700 22-250 AI, a custom 700 17 Remington and an Interarms Mark X barreled in 250 savage AI. All guns have mint condition Leupold Vari-x III 6.5-20 scopes on them. He had a bunch of loaded ammo for each, brass, and Redding dies. She said all the stuff goes with each rifle. I feel bad for what I paid for each gun, but the woman had a detailed list and knew what she had. She had a story for most of the rifles. She couldn’t recall the gunsmith in Colorado who did the work on every custom one though. At the end of the day, she just wanted them gone.

Now that the background is out of the way, the rifle that intrigues me most is the 250AI. I never had an urge or desire to own one, but I bought it because it was a beautiful gun and a hell of a deal. After buying it I did some research and turns out it’s quite the impressive little round. The rounds that came with it are already fire formed rounds loaded with RL15 and 87 gr sierras. I look forward to shooting them and seeing her late husbands reloading skills in action. I plan to deconstruct a few rounds to check charge consistency just because. As I keep doing research on the rifle/cartridge, My question is what is your alls experience with this round? What load combinations do you all like? Any info about it is much appreciated. I can post some pictures of the rifle if anyone would be interested in seeing it.

The 250AI started my Ackley craze and is still my favorite. Of all my AIs, the it delivered the largest percentage increase in velocity over the parent. Mine is a 15” T/C Encore. Due to its 1:10” twist, I shoot lighter bullets (75 grain hammer hunter @ 3,010 fps and 90 grain absolute hammer @ 3260 fps. I’ve had best results with IMR 8208 XBR, Varget and Hodgdon BL-2(C).

I think it will be well worthwhile.
I shot nothing but 250 savage for many years. One day I mistakenly had a shade tree gunsmith open it up to the Ackley chambering & things went haywire. Had Shilen rebarrel back to the original chambering & life was good once again. I now have two 25 creedmoor rifles which is pretty much the same thing but brass is easier to come by.

@Chris Shelton,

Congratulations on your new purchase!!
I really think you're going to love it!

And now the not so happy part...

If you're a reloader, then I'm sure that you have heard, "Don't trust unknown people's reloads"!!

While RL15 may be on the box, you just don't know because you were not there.
They may have meant to load with RL15, but forgot to take the TiteGroup out of the hopper.

Also, you didn't state if they put a charge weight on the box.
May be a hot load.
May be under starting load, which is almost as dangerous.

I know powder isn't cheap, but for peace of mind, I'd pull the bullets and reload them with powder that you are certain what it is, and how much.

As for loads, depends on what you want to do with the rifle.

Deer hunting?
Informal range sessions?
Varmints? Coyotes are included in this.

For deer, since the AI will give you about the same velocity as the standard 257 Roberts, I'd go with either the 115gr Nosler Ballistic Tip or the 115gr Berger VLD.
Probably over a charge of RL17 or 4350. Don't care who's.

The Ballistic Tip will give you a good would channel, along with an exit hole.
I've never recovered a Ballistic Tip in any caliber.

The Berger VLD will go in 1-3" then violently expand.
Making a true mess of the internals.
I haven't had one exit yet. I consistently find the jacket under the offside hide.

Wyoming antelope hate my 250 AI. I’m using the Hornady 100g Innerlock. Very accurate and pleasant to shoot. Rifle also collected a cow elk…100 yards, just behind ear. I know- not an elk cartridge. Data from Sierra manual is very informative and useful. At time they printed info sheet it was their go to for testing all their 25 cal bullets.

Built one an a Rem 700 for medium range whitetail. W-W cases, 41.0 gr/Rel 15 100 gr Ballistic Tip. Shares duty with a 6.5 x55 AI. Don't regret either build. Just happy, happy, happy with them.
