25 Krag Ackley

I find this interesting. I have a single shot 30/40Krag AI on a Falling Block works action, beautiful rifle and shoots great, with 180 gr thru220 gr. I lucked up on a load with 190 gr Moly coated Bergers, that stacks them in a tiny little group. This would be an easy barrel swap for me, using the same extractor, and I could run it hotter than a Krag action would stand. Hmmm.

Too many years ago, friends and I built the 303 ICBM. As you can guess a 303 Brit with a 40deg shoulder and straightened body. I sort of worked and if we knew what we were doing....

Working up some loads in an old SMLE action, the scope fell off, due to the action flexing. The other, un -forseen issue was that the shoulders collapsed easily when reloading. ah well. Some fame however as the cartridge is mentioned in a Canadian book of improved 303's. by Steve Rodgewell.

But following along the same theme - US shooters may not know that post WW2, Australians were not allowed to own rifles in 303 British. Many surplus rifles were re-barrelled in various wildcats from 22/303, the popular 25/303 and the 270/303. They were not particularly powerful cartridges, due to the SMLE actions that were used (Aussie never had the No4 rifle, which always causes problems if you import one into Australia, as the local PD don't know how to take the bolt out and suggest that it is faulty. Ask me how I know).

Cruising a local shop in the early 90's I found a 25/303 with a really nice sporter stock - not military - a Lithgow barrel and a scope mount fitted. Factory ammo fired in the gun produced an "improved" case. 30 deg shoulder and less taper. I used a 25 neck die to work up some loads and, not wishing to push too hard, found a load of H414 that would shove a 100g flat base out around 2700fps. The rifle shot well enough and made for a nice light rifle for the bush, fitted with a Leupold 2.5x scope. I never found the origin of the rifle, or who did the chamber work but eventually sold the rifle to a collector, who was interested in 303 derivatives.

I built another 25 Krag Ackey.
The first one was on a Krag.
The second on was on a Mosin.
