.25 cal for 600 yd sillhouete ?

thinking of building a 25-06AI for 600 yd competition at a local range. thoughts? contour sugestions? will try 115 VLDs

The poor selection of great 25 cal bullets has always hampered the 25's. A 6.5 Creedmoor shooting 140's or even a 243 shooting 115's has more energy, less recoil and substantially less wind drift at 600 yards. While it would work the question would be why when there are considerably better cartridges for the job.

I shoot Remington sender 25-06 out to 1000yds. I shoot 115 bergers with h-1000. this a hunting gun with a shepherd scope on it and we shoot bowling pins at that range. it is a hard gun to beat if I do my part. have lost count on all the animals it has got.

Shooting silhouette or 600 yard competition is a lot different then hunting. Guns that are really accurate show up. Guns that shoot 5 shots in the 2 to 3 inch range and consistently do it. I would choose another chambering for it. It is real hard beating 6mm's at 600. Accuracy and BC are needed. There is a reason so many 6mm's show up and win. Matt

I'm not looking to set any records, but I was thinking that a coustom 25-06AI would be capable of half MOA at 600. The match I was refering to is 3 5shot strings at a 5" gong from a bench.
IF not a 25-06, and staying with a long action what else to consider; 6.5-06, 6.5x55?
caliber is limited to .30 cal and below but I dont want somthing that is gonna beat me up, I dont know yet if a break is allowed. thanks for the help fellas

Either of those are fine cartridges and would do well with good bullets. The next step up would be the 280, 280 Ackley and 284 but will have more recoil. Either of the 6.5's or the above 7's would give you a huge advantage over the 25/06.

I would go to a match and see what is being used and winning. I would imagine a 6.5x47 would be a good choice also. Look up equipment lists of 600 yard shoots. Like the 600 yard IBS Nationals. Maybe there are other shoots in your area that you could go to and watch. You can learn a lot by going and seeing and asking questions. Matt

The 6mm do not reliably knock down the rams. The 6.5 is marginal. Good 25cal bullets dont exist. The 7mm08 is the perfect balance of power and recoil and is what id say 90% are shooting. Its not gonna win a BR match but at 500m itll smack a ram just right. On the contour theres a weight limit so be mindful of that. Short and fat is the norm. Check over on steelchickens for suggestions on current fads or like matt said just go to the match. Youll find friendly folks there that may even let you try a couple rigs. Its always a good idea instead of buying twice when you start out with something you dont end up liking.

Well a stout load of IMR-4350 will start a 115 Berger at 3060, which at 600 is down to 2047. I'm at 1600 feet so you can run the numbers if you like. I run this load in four 25-06's. My 40X will most days hold somewhere around a .3 five shot group at 100 yards. I also like to shoot Nosler 85 grain bullets at 3600 with RL 19. Very popular deer caliber in Texas. Brass is everywhere. I also play with a good 6MM Remington with the heavies, and it's no 25-06!

If your just hitting the 5" gong, not having to knock anything over. Then the 7mm isn't needed. I would use a 6mm - 6.5mm. With my 6.5x47L, I can consistently shoot the small chicken targets set up at 500m.

As mentioned 25 cal bullets are a bit suboptimal for 600 yards and up due to lighter weights and lower BCs. If you already had the gun, I'd say go for it. I've seen them do OK.

But if you a building a gun, there are a number of better 6.5 and 7 mm options. At 600 yards, I'd go with the 260 Rem due to long barrel life, availability of Lapua brass, moderate recoil, and high BCs. Make sure you have a twist rate that will stabilize all the bullets near 140 grains.

I have a semi- custom 25.06,( new barrel, trigger and stock. It shoots 75 gr. and 110 gr bullets into 1/2" groups. However, I would be lying if I didn't say I often wish there was a better selection of bullets for it. I was going to go 6mm-284 with this rifle but, I changed my mind at the last minute. Well, 1 year later, and I am now in the middle of a 6mm-284 build.

Definitely some good options, I'll look into the 6mm-284, and the 260 would be easy to load for. shout out to NMKID, a good guy to do business with
Also I orderd a 243 LV 8 twist remage barrel from Jim at Northland today. All the storys about Jim being a good guy to deal with are true (and paitient) This will be my dedicated coyote rifle
I've found a couple shoots next month that I will try to attend, can't wait!
