25-284 ?

I have a friend who is looking for a set of 25-284 dies.
He also needs some brass.
His rifle was built when Winchester was the only one who made brass.
Will the other brands of brass (Lapua, Norma etc.) fit the older Winchester chamber ?

Hal

The closest thing to WW 284 brass is Lapua. Norma and Peterson are thicker and will probably require neck turning. Hope that helps.

You can run around trying to find dies and they might resize to the dimensions you need or...

Cast his chamber to be absolutely sure that you know what the dimensions are from the casting. Guess and by-gosh can sometimes come with a surprise. ;)

Doubt that brass other than WW will work in a old chamber, the bases are wider than the chamber...
Stick with WW brass and you will be OK....

I built a 25-284 several years ago and bought factory off the shelf Hornady dies for it. Surprised me they were available but they were!

Curiously, the Hodgdon No. 26 manual (1992) has 25-284 data, saying "It is likely more custom rifles have been built in .25-284 than factory or custom rifles in .284 Winchester. ... Of the several wildcats spawned by the .284 Winchester, all except the 6mm, .25 and .338 versions have quietly faded away." No mention of 6.5-284 at all.
