25-284?

I have just gotten a new rifle chambered in .25-284 win. 1 in 10" twist barrel. My question is can this be loaded to be effective at 1000yds? Or is the lack of good match bullets going to hinder this? I am not going to shoot any competions with the rifle just will maybe experiment with it at that range. Will be using the rifle as a deer/coyote gun mainly. I just like to punch holes in paper and practice at extended range some.

Thanks,

A friend of mine shoots a 25-284 for hunting and F class . His gun has always shot very well, he is on his secound barrel now (both shoot great).
He uses I think JLKs (107s or 117s)and RL22 .
fed primers
he gets 3300fps with ease and has a great deal of fun with it,I will try to get him to answere this post with some loads he uses

I just finished building a pair of XP-100, 25/284's for a upcoming Antelope hunt in Wyoming in October... Mine shoots the 115 Berger VLD's very nice with 49.0 grains of H-4831SC. The other one shoots 100 Ballistic Tips with 44.0 grains of H-4350 just about as good..... 16" barrels on both of them, and they will shoot under 1 1/2 at 300 yards..
The 115 VLD is a heck of a bullet in any 25 caliber....

Thanks everyone, I am pretty excited about this gun the first rilfe I have had built for me and it was made the way I wanted it to be. Love the work that was done, I will try and post some pics and the smith info later.

Ive been shooting a 25-284 for 3 years now, originally my rifle was a 25-06 sako 75 used for shooting deer, i had it re-barreled using a pac-nor barrel and got a reamer from pacific tool made for shooting 117gn gamekings, it shot so well i decided to try some match bullets, i tried 108 jlk's. 115 berger vld's and i managed to get hold of some 110gn fowlers
[flat base]. It shot all these bullets very well although i would say the jlk's were best at 1000, the fowlers were fantastic out to 600yds although ive never tried them at 1000 due to the flat base, as well as shooting deer i began to use it for f class comps where it done very well. it has been re-barrelled again using a 30" border barrel and the stock has been changed to a mcmillan f class as i only use it for targets now.
it has always been easy to load for, i am using lapua and norma cases, fed 210m primers and 54gn re22 with all the above bullets, this gives me an easy 3250fps.

Good luck with yours.

ok here is the info, sorry for the delay, not that anyone was holding their breath, lol, it is a shilen barrel, chamber but with a PTG reamer with no turn neck. The work was done by R & D Custum Products out of central Ia. Denny is a great guy and does really nice work.

This is an old thread that I found and probably old news, but I shot a 25-284 built on a Rem 700 SA for over 30 years. Would still have it if I didn't love watching things disappear with 75 gr. HP bullets going real fast. This is the deer killing-est, coyote smearing rifle one could ever imagine. Mine had a Shilen barrel on it and shot half inch groups with 120 gr bullets from Sierra, Nosler and Hornady. The not so good looking Sierra Match HP performed this task the most but I always hunted with the 120gr. Hornady HP hunting bullet. Every animal I ever shot was down before I got back in the field of view, except a mulely that I shot at a distance no one would ever believe. This buck run up the hillside about twenty yards, turned around, run 20 steps and rolled head over a%$ into a deep canyon. This rifle should have been standardized decades ago. I'm sure all the big boys were worried about feed problems that just a little relief on the feed rails cured. Now we have the 6.5 and I would probably recommend this because it just has to be a winner. I'm saving up though. I have the old one off and I'm getting a 257 barrel ordered. I even have a lathe now so a 25-284 will be back in the cabinet.... Never owned a rifle I respected more.
