25-284...Short or Long action ???

Considering a 25-284 build. Would I be wasting my time with a short action ? Haven't done any research on the 25 caliber bullets bearing surface, bullet length etc. My hope was to build on a short action.

^^^^^^ good advice! I've got a 6/284 on a medium mauser action and it's fills up this action with 95gr or above weight bullets

My 6.5-284 is built on a LA Rem 700 but if I were to build a new one I would use a SA Rem 700 and have a Wyatt's Outdoor Mid Length kit installed. It requires a small amount of machining but it will allow a SA Rem 700 to accept an OAL up to 3.235. I've talked to a couple different guys that have SA Rem 700 builds with this setup and they feed great with zero issues. https://wyattsoutdoor.com/product/short-action-mid-length-prc-kit/

I'm kinda surprised on the long (standard) action length replies.
Especially since the intermediate Mauser length action is supposed to be perfect for the straight 284.
And lets face it, the 7mm bullets are going to be longer than the 25 caliber bullets.

I've noted this in past threads. I run a 284 win on a short action. OAL is 2.980 with 162 Amax/ELDs. Velocities running from 2900-3000+ depending on powders. RL17 has been my go too powder. Curious about this option with the .25 caliber with the 131 grain bullets. Gotta believe they'd be longer for caliber than the 162 is for the .284 caliber. Interested in the Wyatt's conversion bottom metal option. It's one I've never been informed about. I'll look into it.

Man, those do look long!

Ok, 2 questions....

1) What twist rate to shoot these?
2)How do they perform on game?

Ok, 3 questions.
Anybody shoot some ballistic gel with one?

From what I'm seeing 7-7.5 twist works best. Also heard they do great on big game. No idea or word on gelatin testing. If I build a 25-284, I'd go with a 7 twist and run them around 3100+/-. Hoping a short action will work. Looking for info on OAL for the 131 in a 284 case for optimum performance

The issue to be addressed with a short action is removing a loaded round. Need to remove the bolt in many cases. If it is a tube stock that can be a pita.

I guess id ask what are your goals? What are the intentions for the rifle? Starting with any donar parts? Or building from scratch. I see these questions often. I do understand them but they dont make a lot of sense to me. But in most all of my builds dollars are key. So I go most bang for the buck.

I dont really see the purpose of sticking it in a short action that needs to be worked over. Unless weight is an issue then maybe but most kits run DBM and then your not saving much of anything over a LA. If you had something laying there possibly starting with it might be different.

Just my .2 cents

So the loaded round in ideal spec is over 3.00" ?
My 6.5x284 loaded rounds are 3.150. My rifle was originally a short action. The rounds would not eject and caused a safety issue in a cease fire at Perry. Rifle now has a long action. Your oal will depend on what bullet and the chamber specs you have.

The Wyatt's kit comes with a new bolt stop to address this issue. The 3.235" kit won't work on more 700 clones. The ejection port is also modified/opened up.wya.jpg

If you go to the link I posted above and scroll down the page Kevin Wyatt has a great video where he explains how his mid length kit with the proper machine work turns a SA Rem 700 into a mid length Rem 700 that'll accept, feed, and eject an OAL of 3.200+

Again, it would depend upon how long the bullet actually is.
My straight 284 with 150gr ABLR, is right at 3.00".
Is the 131gr BlackJack longer than a 7mm 150gr ABLR?
Exactly. That's why I'm asking anyone reading this thread how long their loaded rounds are with the 131 BJs. My guess is Yes, the 131 is longer. My 6.5-284s run around 3.155-3.160 with the 140 class VLD/ELD. They are only long actions. My 284 with 162s in my short action is 2.980. Not ideal for maximum performance but considering the reloader 17 helps velocity significantly, 3000 fps is all I need for that round for hunting. If I cant feed or eject live rounds from a properly loaded 25-284 in a short action, I'll use a LA.
