25/284 Build&load info

Im going to build a 25/284have a Bartlin 1/10 twist it was chambered by Dave Bruno for a Rem, 700 i don't know if it came off a long or short i have a short do think this will work it will set up as a single shot any kind of Help will be a big help, I don;t know lwere to start for a load, I'm not building it for bench just for a fun gun some thing i Don;t have in 25,Cal, I saw targets in the ,3 so i no it shoots, Thanks for the help, Jerry

You can bet the farm they shoot !!!!
H-4350 and 100 to 115 grain bullets from the Ballistic tips to the Berger VLD's will do what needs done.
H4831 SC is also a powder to check out with the heaver bullets..
Randys BIB's in the 110 grain weight are also something to check out..
Ya wanna vaporize critters, check out the 85 grain Ballistic Tips over H-4350....
A short action will do OK, but you may not be able to eject a loaded round.
F210M primers work well too....
I would hate to ever be without one...

My dad has a 25/284 and it shoots like a dream. He shoots 115gr TSX also has some nosler 120gr partition loaded as well. I want to say we've loaded using IMR4350. You can use 25/06 load data for it as well cause they are very similar. Also you can go on to hodgdons website and it has load data for it as well. Post some pics of it when you get it done.

Just use Hodgdon's published 25-284 load data. Period. Why try to adapt a "similar" cartridge's data?

I applaud you for daring to build a quarter bore wildcat. I'm waiting for the obligatory "Why not a 6.5-284?" etc.

According to Hodgdon, the 25-284 was the first necked-down 284 wildcat to gain significant popularity. Few would believe that.

(Incidentally, speaking of similar cartridges, did you know the 243 WSSM and 6mm Rem are virtual twins WRT interior ballistics? Compare Hodgdon's load data for those powders common to these two cartridges, and you'll see what I mean. Fairly astonishing just how similar.)

Brians356,the only reason I said you could go off the 25/06 is cause hodgdon doesn't show every bullet out there. My dads 25/284 shoots like a dream and the 25cal is brutal on the deer. We also built a 6mm/284 as well. Still working on a good load for it but I think I've found a powder it likes.

Thanks for the clarification, and yes, there are limited bullet weights in their 25-284 data. I need to go compare 25-284 and 25-06 data myself, but you've obviously spotted a correlation which I won't now dispute.

When I had the 30-284 built I happened to have Hodg. # 26 manual, The data is listed in the book as 30-06 / 30-284. A friend has a 25-284 and he also used 25-06 data as a starting point.

When my dad first started loading it he went to the hi side and actually blew primers out. When I loaded the Barnes tax's for it I went off the 25/06 and they shoot good. I don't have the box of bullets with me to share the load data tho😕.

Comparing Hodgdon's data for the powders (H380, H414, H4350, H4831) and bullets (75, 87, 100, 117, 120 grains) common to both 25-284 and 25-06, I see limited correlation. Both starting and maximum charges for 25-06 are significantly higher than for 25-284, 4% to 9% in most instances, with the notable exception of H4831 behind 100-gr and 117-gr bullets, where they are pretty close (w/ 25-06 still a bit higher.)
