25-20 Single shot Ammo

A friend reached out to me this morning and asked if I had or know anyone that has 25-20 single shot ammo or brass. I'm not too familiar with the older cartridges but apparently there's a difference between the 25-20 WCF and 25-20 single shot. Does anyone here know of anywhere to purchase brass or loaded ammo? Rareammo.com doesn't have any but I came here to the real source of knowledge. I'm confident someone here knows! Thanks.

I'm thinking that it's time that one of us devise/invent a process to create 218, 25-20, and 32-20 from 357 mag. I've heard of it, but not the details. jd

25-20 single shot is different than 25-20 WCF. The single shot has a .318 base, WCF .350” and is shorter.

Brass and ammo turns up, often block powder even if it’s new. Or smokeless and jacketed bullets which might not be great for the bore in old steel. $2-3 for brass, $5 for Ammo.

22 R Lovell brass can work since it originated as 25-20 SS necked down.

You can make 25-20 S.S. from 223, but it’s painstaking. The rim size is the same. You swage down the case head some to get the body taper out of the way, then turn down the 200 line to rim portion in a lathe.

357 to 32-20 is done the same but easier since you’re reducing a .378” base to .350” instead of .320”. It is a little short. If you need the full length, use 357 maximum.

I may know where there are a set of 25-20 SS dies if your friend is interested. Maybe some brass.

A word of caution, if this is an early Winchester, they were bad about stealing other peoples cartridges. There are some early 25-20 WCF rifles marked SS, and Winchester brass marked 25-20 SS that is WCF. Getting good measurements or a chamber cast wouldn’t hurt.

Bertram makes brass for the 25-20 SS and Buffalo arms shows it out of stock, they also carry 25-20 SS ammo but again out of stock but you might want to give them a call and see what the statis of it is.

Years ago I stumbled into a couple hundred used cases at a tiny pawn shop. Found someone who needed it. The brass is out there but it’s a crap shoot.

He will have to go over to the ASSRA forum and become a member of the ASSRA. At that point he can contact a gentleman named Dave Plummer who has thousands of new Jamison 25/20 S.S. Brass but will only sell to members.

I came here to say this as well. I bought some from him a few months ago and he is a great seller, now if only some reasonably priced dies would turn up.
