25-06 twist for bullets over 100gr

After thinking over 25 years and more on building a 25-06 it is time to go through with it. I am starting to collect parts for the build and need to know if I need a 10 or 9 twist barrel for shooting bullet weights over 100gr. I just bought a nice HS Precision stock here that was repainted by HS in a long action from Jobie here. Not sure if I am going with a BDL setup or go with 1 of the DBM,s that Stocky Stocks sells. Any how what is the verdict on what I need, 9 or 10 twist?

Thanks,
Dan

Hello, I always shot 10 twist up to 120 grain bullets with outstanding results.

The Berger 115 Hunters will stabilize in a 1:10" twist except when the deep freeze of winter slows everyone down at sea level. You lose a little in the BC but they shoot as proven by thousands of shooters. These bullets used to be 30% more expensive than any other .25 caliber bullet so I quit using them. Now that Berger was bought out, their prices are all stupidly higher than most other makers. Only Hornady beats them out with the ATips now.

However, if you decide to try those 131 Blackjacks, you will need a decidedly faster twist rate, something along the lines of 1:7", 7.25" or maybe 7.5" to keep these bullets stable. The Blackjack website has a ton of information regarding many cartridges and barrel twist rates.

Dan, I was where you are last year. I wound up going with a 10T. My main bullet is the Berger 115 VLD-H and the only thing that gets me above 1.5 on stability is my elevation (5000), and you need to be at 3500 or higher to get to 1.5

If I had it to do over, I would have gone with the 9T, and I'm not considering something like the Blackjacks.

I have shot both the 9 and 10 twist. for the longer 110, 115 and 120 bullets, you will thank yourself for having a 9 twist. The accuracy using 100 grain and less will not be a problem.

Thanks a bunch for the info guys. It sounds like I am going for the 9 twist. Looks like I better get busy and order me a 9 twist Sendero contour barrel. I do not think I am going to find what I need on the shelf some where. I have had a ton of stuff built over the years and can not tell you the amount of times I wanted to have one built and never did. I am excited about this new caliber for me.

For some reason the 25 and the 27 calibers have stubbornly hung on to the 1:10 twist. With the old cup and core bullets, up to 120 grain in the quarter bore and the 150 grain in the 27, the accuracy for hunting has been acceptably good. With the newer style bullets both calibers could use a faster twist to stabilize these. If it was me, I'd go with the 9 twist as a minimum, maybe and 8 or a 7.5 twist might get the VLD's and the other longer profile bullets to stabilize better.

Both of my 25 caliber rifles wear 1:10 twist barrels.
1) Ruger 77 MKII in 257 Roberts loaded to +P.
2) Stevens 200 with E.R. Shaw 24" barrel in 250 Savage.

Both rifles shoot 75gr Sierra HP varmint to 120gr Sierra HPBT GameKings with zero issues out to 600 yards.
Have shot the 115gr Berger VLD-H out to 1,000 yards with both.

I've only run into several bullets that require a faster twist, hence i don't buy or shoot those.
One being the 131gr. BlackJack.
The others being monolithic bullets from Cutting Edge Bullets.

I am not going to shoot the heavier 131gr bullets. I am settled on a 9 twist. Looks like I will have to order a barrel. All the barrels at Bugholes are 10 twist and I need a Remington varmint/sender contour barrel.

Back in the 80s when I bought my 25-06, bullets were limited. Nosler 115 BTs were one of my favorites. With the price of the new bullets you might give the Noslers a try. Before I reloaded Federal premiums were about the best going, I think the load I used had 120 partitions, they didn't shoot bad at all.

I have 10s in all of my .25s currently and they all shoot the 115 Bergers great. The .25-06 and the 115 Berger is a fantastic combo and kills like lightning.

Maybe you can help me I have a bartlien that won’t shoot 115 grain bullets could it be the 1-10 twist

The 1 - 10 twist works well with up to 120 gr. weight class bullets. But if you want to go heavier as mentioned above then the 1 - 7.5 or 1 - 8 will be a better way to go.

Wow...
I saw where several people liked my comment from 2020 and I had to reread it.
It surprised me that in a span of only 4 years I've gone from having 2 rifles in 25 caliber to 7 rifles in 25 caliber.

And that doesn't include the other caliber rifles I've bought.

Yet none still have faster than a 1:10 twist.
