25-06 barrel length question

Wouldn't a faster burning powder make up for a shorter barrel???????

Surely it could make up the difference in the 2 inches of extra barrel.

I tried that a number of times with TC pistols and rifles in the same chambering. Others can do what they wish of course but I long ago stopped trying to outsmart the barrel length after finding repeatedly the top performing powders in rifle length barrels also performed best in pistol length barrels.

Saw an earlier thread about the effectiveness of 25-06 as a deer rifle. Thinking about getting my son one. He has other rifles and we primarily bow hunt but a gun is always a good gift! Some articles I've read really harp on a 24 inch barrel to get full performance from this caliber. Only a few make a 24 inch any more and they are more than I want to spend for a gun that will not be used all that much. Looking at a Savage Axis II which is a 22 inch barrel. Am I losing much by getting the 22 inch barrel? About a $400 price difference. 250-400 yard shots for the most part.
Thanks for any suggestions
The deer won't know the difference.

Couple of things to keep in mind. The SAAMI max pressure for the 25-06 is 65K PSI. That is higher than many other rounds. If you go with the shorter barrel, you can pick powders that minimize velocity loss. I shoot the 25-06 in 24" and 26" barrels. And with the right powder I can safely achieve 3400 fps with a 100 gr bullet. So even with some loss for the 22" barrel, probably something you can still live with.
