244rem 1:8, what freebore?

Building a new varmint match gun in 244rem with an 8 twist, would like to shoot the 105 or 110 bullets, what freebore would be good to start?

I've seen confusion on here many times when people talk about 6rem, so, I figured using it's original name would be easier.

When you order your reamer I would make the ND big enuff so that you could use 7x57 brass without turning the necks,,,,Roger
PS..I have aprox, 125 6mm brass (mostly Rem.--some Federal ) that I would sell if you cant find any brass,,,I would go .243 or .243 AI if it was me,,,that way you could use Lapua brass !!!!...

I have about 300 RP cases fired about 5-6 times and sitting on 260 new unfired Win cases as well, have 3 other 6rems.

good for you,,,,most people are scrambling to get brass for them,,,,I like the Win. brass better,,,it seems to last longer and not get split necks,,,and take more pressure,,,,(most Rem brass is brittle in my experience),,,Roger

Concerning freebore in the 6 Remington. The case is large, and you will NOT get even close to filling it up with powder. I go with shorter freebore than you would use on a 6 BR for this very reason. As you stuff the bullet back into the case, simply watch for doughnuts by sticking the base of the bullet down in the case past the shoulder neck junction. If/when you get a doughnut, simply cut it out with a K&M tool. By using this approach, you will get longer useful accuracy in your barrel life.

Really? o_O

The .244 Rem. or 6mm Rem. as you prefer, holds one grain more powder than the .243 Win. case. Yet, we won't come close to filling it? I find this statement hard to accept, especially since I've been shooting full cases and long bullets seated out for lots of years, accurately and efficiently.

This is not a short action cartridge, no matter what Remington says or does. It is an intermediate cartridge which can use an OAL of up to 3.200" if required. That's why I use the Defiance XM action and bottom metal for hunting rifles and the longer, heavier VLD bullets with the 6mm Rem. I can even switch this cartridge out for the 6mm Crusader (improved version) and still fill case even with 61 grains of water capacity while maintaining efficiency. :)

Given your description for loading, you would be better off with the 6mm Creedmoor (53 grains) and be able to seat the VLDs out to SA magazine length, making for a very efficient cartridge. ;)

Regards.

Kurz, I have shot the barrels out of 7- 6mm Rem's. Rugers, Remington's and customs, a dozen or more 243's, and AI's in both, targets were Rock Chucks, p. dogs, and coyotes.

You could certainly fill the 6 Rem case with Retumbo and 105's, but R#26 is where I would start, and I surely would not throat it for .105 freebore for shooting 105-108g bullets.

With the 6 Creed needing about .135 to .199 FB, how much usable barrel life are you going to have in a detachable magazine? The 6 Creed is so short, you can't stuff the bullet back in the case without having a pressure spike. I would think that the shooting discipline would depend on the accuracy requirement. My rifles are darn finicky on the OAL in relation to the lands, hybrids included to shoot small groups.

The 6 Rem has a LONG neck, be sure to take that into account when determining the freebore you want....freebore amount should be less than short neck cases.

My SAAMI spec JGS reamer has .100 freebore and .277 neck. This is for a hunting rifle 8 twist on a 700 long action. I've owned several in the past and it's one of my favorite calibers for S.C. deer. All have been very accurate with H4831 and 90 gr. Scirocco, and also 95 gr. SST. I have not used this reamer yet, but I don't do anything fancy for hunting rifle chambers.

This should give you a starting point. Maybe call Dave Kiff at PT&G, or JGS and ask best freebore for your purpose.

Good luck, Waverly

6mm Rem with 0.100" freebore in a long action sounds good to me.
I would definitely not go with less than 0.075" fb.
