.243AI RL-17 Help

Hi guys,

I'm working up a load for a .243AI with RL-17 and 95gr. Berger VLDs,moly). I'm at 46 grains and 3,300fps with no pressure signs on the brass. Anybody have Quickload or similar program to give me an idea of the pressure I'm running? Everything seems okay, but I don't want to be running some crazy pressure.

Thanks,

Richard

The first thing that pops up says you are about 10,000 PSI over max pressure. The gr. weight of water with a fired case level full and the OAL of the cartage make a difference in pressure.

Thanks for the info. What is the recommended max. powder charge? OAL is 2.810. No idea on the water weight.

Richard

Quickload is saying 44.2 gr. Re17 - seating depth 2.810 - 24" barrel is the max pressure,55200 PSI)- vol. 3181. Changing the seating depth .100 lowered the pressure on your load 3000 psi. The default setting is oal 2.710 with the 46 gr Re17. It shows 7000 PSI over pressure now. For grins - take a fired case with the primer in it weigh it then fill it level full of water and weigh it again and see how much the water increased the weight. You can take a paper towel and wipe the water off the outside then take the edge and soak the top until it looks level. No guarantees

Thanks. I'll try and get the water weight tomorrow.

I was hoping that I could run 3,300 safely. Man it shoots flat. I am using a Pac-Nor 3 groove barrel with a 1-9 twist, 24".

I did look at the 6XC data on the main page, and they were getting 3,200 with a 107gr. SMK,moly). It has less case capacity than the .243 so I was hoping I was still okay. Better safe than sorry though.

Thanks again,

Richard

Richard and Glenn

I have a very simuelar set up. I went back and looked in my log and in March of 07 I worked up a load with the 95gr VLD using R-22. I started at 48gr and went to 49. The 49gr shot the best but was too hot for summer time. in 20 deg weather it was fine. any thing above 40deg was not safe. I hate to imagine what the pressure of this load is. The Velocity is 3427fps out of a 24" Kreiger four groove. Im thinking of trying N560 or N160. When ever I have good results with 4831SC or R22 It seems like N560 also performs real well.
I thought I would try some R17 but after seeing your velocity I may skip it. 3400fps and a 95VLD is a death ray on Coyotes!!!

My other 243AI on a winchester M70 shot well also at 48.5gr R22 right at 3390fps. Both Barrels are Kreigers 1:10 number 4 countour.

Glenn what would you think the pressure be on these two loads and R22. Is it as hot as I think it is?

Q L says your load of 48.5 gr. Re22 with 95 gr. Berger is right at max pressure with 3181 FPS with a 24" barrel.

Richard
Your case holds .4 gr. more water than Q L default so when you make that change that lowers the pressure about 900 PSI. It's showing about 6000 PSI above max. now. It goes to show you that you can't expect to use anyone else load because of the difference of even chamber size.
Another thing there may be such a thing as a fast barrel or a slow barrel. If there is such a thing as a slow or fast barrel that could change pressure.
interesting
Remember Q L is a guide only and may not be safe.
The default temperature is 70º
