243AI, is there a simple way

A set-back on a standard 243 Win. barrel is an option but I don't know about $100.00 to have it done.
A decent gunsmith who has an A.I. Reamer would need to quote that price. - I'd use someone reputable & pay more than just give it to the first thing "smokin".

any gunsmith suggestions?

If you are going to get a new set of dies etc. you may want to take a look at the 6SLR. The brass is easy to get right and it gives you a bit more neck to seat your bullet in.

Rick

@Dusty Stevens (forum member) would probably be able to recommend someone locally in Arkansas who would be able to the job. - Would save time & shipping costs.

Right now I'm using SG Precision in San Antonio, Tx & there is some waiting time and I don't know if they have that reamer in hand.

Dont know anybody that would chuck up a savage barrel much less try to dial one in and dull a reamer for $100. I feel pretty certain if you posted a request in the gunsmithing forum somebody would jump on it though

Correct Indeed - $100.00 isn't going to go very far with a reputable gunsmith. - A set-back is going to be close to the same as a regular chambering job. - If it were mine, I'd start with a fresh 1-8 twist blank from a good barrel maker & have the gunsmith do it "shouldered up" without the barrel nut.

A set back still requires every step a chamber job does plus some. Not to mention most wont shove their reamer in a used barrel. A job such as that would cost a chamber job, customer’s reamer and an additional $100 rework fee. If the customer doesnt have a reamer it would be about the same cost to get a brand new barrel done- with a shoulder done right- using the gunsmiths reamer. Decisions, decisions right?

Dusty is absolutely correct on this. One of the reasons I don't have many barrels set back, unless it's a absolute stinger.

My buddy Terry and I have been load workups for the standard 243 and we have the same chamber and twist. His barrel is a CBI 1-8 and I have a several barrels and rifles and my new barrel is Bartlein 1-8. Using N160 last weekend he was sending Speer 70 TNTs to over 4000 FPS to the point they were blowing up, and the accuracy is comparable to a 6br. Which is crazy...

I am shooting the 108s at 3350 fps INTO LITTLE TINY GROUPS.

I really can't imagine needing an Ackley in 243. At least not with N160 which is simply amazing in 243. Thank you John Whidden. :)
