243 win out of a 22" sporter barrel

Looking for real world experience from y'all shooting the 243 win out of a 22" sporter barrel.

I would like to start load development using 85 gr Sierra HPBT bullets. Have a variety of primers to use. Also have a variety of powders to try out, but I was considering trying Varget, H4350, or H4831SC. Also have at my disposal AA4350, IMR4350, superformance, IMR7828, and N140.

Would like to hear what others are using. I know my rifle may not like what others do. BTW my rifle is a S&W 1500 that I picked up used for $200. Figured if the barrel won't shoot I have a decent action to use for a rebarrel.

My Rem 600 does well with varmint bullets and WW 760/H414, or H380. For mule deer 100 Partitions and H100v. There is not a great deal of velocity loss vs 24" bbl. 4350 and 4831 are widely used powders in 243W and should do you well.

I'm using 38 grains of Varget in my Model 70 Featherweight (22" barrel) with the 85 grain Sierra GameKing. Velocity is 3035 with an ES of 23 and a SD of 12. Accuracy averages 0.7" at 100 yards.

Kills deer / hogs / coyotes quite nicely.

My best results for the 243 with that wonderful bullet has been with either IMR 4350, H4350, W760 or 4064. Using Rem 9 1/2 primers. Since you have 140 I would definitely give it a try.

I've never had any consistent good luck with Varget. YMMV. Good luck and let us know how it goes. WD

I haven't seen anyone else here that's using 4895, but that's what I settled on for my 22 incher years ago. I used both H- and IMR, and had great luck with both of them. I tried IMR 4831, and IMR 4350, but it was 4895 that really made it sing. My favorite bullet was the old Speer 90 gr spitzer. If I was using the heaviest bullets, I'd go with the slower powders. jd

42 GRS H-414 DOES WONDERS WITH 85GR BTHP SIERRA'S OUT OF SEVERAL 243'S AROUND THIS FARM :D:D

The 85 Sierra BTHP is an outstanding bullet. I've been shooting it out of my 243's (4 each) for over 20 years. It's probably the best all purpose bullet for this caliber in the 9 to 10" twist rifles. It's a hunting bullet but shoots like a match bullet with excellent terminal performance.

IMR 4350 with Federal 210 match primers works real well in my rifles. Other powder that works very well are IMR 4064 and Varget. I do believe you can go wrong with any of these powders for this bullet.

I appreciate all the replies. Guess it's time to just start getting to loading and see what happens.

excellent bullet for hunting!!!

H4350 and @42 gr I am going from my memory on charge wt , you'll love it!

fun is finding what works BEST for you and YOUR gun.

OP,,,the H-4350 is the sizzle with 85 gr bullets in a factory .243 W....listen to ole' WD up there in response #4....he can get em to shoot pretty well,,,,Roger
PS,,,use max loads and jam em at first and also try them with ~.025" jump,,,,if it wont shoot this ,,,get a new bbl !!!!...OBTW,,,most used guns that wont shoot are not shot out,,,they just need a GOOD cleaning because of abuse/neglect,,,,,

1968 ADL 700,with a '69 weaver 3-9

Sierra 85 BTHP,worked up to near max with 4350.This has been the load for this rig so long.Bout the only other bullet has been a flat based Speer 100....when my boys were first getting serious with their Deer wackin, this was the bullet.

My youngist was hunting with it,and dragging small'ish does,by himself at 12y.o.And to this day,one of the most "classic" 1/4'ing away shots he made, exhibiting near perfect wound channel, that this hillbilly has ever witnessed.Normally,it's a one bullet gun,85 Sierra.Good luck, and good shooting.BW

Accurate 4064 has worked good for me with that bullet. Around 38grs with a WLR . I load these for a friend of mine also and it has been a hammer on whitetail. I would imagine there are a lot of powders that would work like, 4350, RL15, 4895, 760, etc

From what you have, H4350 will most likely perform best. IMR 4064 is my go to powder for the 85 SGK.
