.243 Win article!

Wow! Another excellent article, this one on the .243 Win. Again, I'm impressed with the wealth of information compiled in an article on 6mmBR.com.

Since I've been hunting varmints, predators and deer with the 6mm Rem since 1974, I know what a hot little .243 or 6mm can do - the article speaks to this. Thanks for the caution about using good bullets when hunting deer sized game, many .243 bullets are a mite fragile for such use. I strongly concur with the recommendation to use the 100 gr Rem Core-Lokt and Nosler's famous partition. Nosler's 95 grain ballistic tip is another one that has worked out well for me, with accuracy and excellent on-game terminal ballistics.

Was quite impressed with the 3340 fps velocity from the .243 AI with 100+ grain bullets - that's right up there with my .25-06 and 100 grain Barnes TSX bullets... Right zippy little cartridge ya'll are playing with. :) Cool!

Again, thanks for compiling a tremendous amount of useful info into a very readable article! Regards, Guy

Guy,

Glad you liked the article. Let me tell you these Cartridge Guide take a ton of effort, but the goal is to compress a lot of info in one place.

Chuck Hawks was kind enough to let me quote his thoughts about the Core-Lokt and Partition bullets. Bullet construction is indeed an important factor once one moves up from the Varmint species to deer and antelope.

M700:

You might try the 6mm Swift Schirocco it is a better bullet than the Remington Corelock.

You might also want to warn folks with older Remingtons, they came with 1: 12 twist barrels. The 90-115 grain bullets need a 1:10 and even better 1:8 twist barrel for the heavier bullets.

I have had very good results with the Combined Technologies Ballistic Silvertips that come in the 95gr bullet. My son used them to take 3 deer this year and none walked away. I have also used the Barnes TSX in 85gr and have not only had excellent accuracy from these, but I took two deer using them and had very good kills with both. I think the 6mm and the .243 take a bad rap when it comes to hunting and I guess we all know how accurate the 6mm bullets are.
