.243 Win and Varget

I was wondering is anyone has tried Varget in the .243 Win. I just finished a nice Rifle for a friend and I want to break it in and load some Cartridges for him. Its a Stiller Predator, Jewell Trigger. Lilja Barrel w/9" twist in an H-S Stock.....4X14X40 Leupold on top. I'll be loading the 87 Gr. Berger VLD and the 95 GR. Berger VLD . Any help would be greatly appreciated..Thanks, George

Looks like Varget is going to ba a little too fast in this case with the 87 Gr. Bullets, I have lots of Varget, very low on H-4350 and H-4831........George

Try it. IMR4064 is almost the same as Varget as far as burn rate & IMR4064 has done well for me with 100, 95 and 85 gr pills. However, H4350 & IMR4350 are the real magic for mine. One catch, Varget gives low load density and IMR4064 does much better.

I've used Varget mainly with bullet weights 85 grains and under. It worked ok in my rifles but I've obtained my best groups with IMR 4064 (lighter bullets) and IMR 4350 (bullet weight over 85 grains). I have four 243's and they all shoot IMR 4350 very very well with 90 Nosler BT and 100 Sierra Pro Hunter bullets.

I recently tried H4895 with 85 grain Sierra BT hollow points and was surprised how well it shot, in the 1/2 moa range in a 10" twist sporter weight rifle. Haven't done enough testing yet to endorse this combo but it looks promising.

Im also running four of them and 3 out of the four eat RL22 with 105Amax and the fourth eats H4350 with 87 Vmax. All shoot extremly well and barrel life has not become an issue due to the revolving lineup at hand.

I use to burn Varget at 87grn vmax, 90grn Bergers, 87grn hornday hp match, 85grn sierra hpbt and spitzers out of my Sako 85 and it did just fine in velocity and accuracy. I was very impressed with the results. Give it a try, you'll be supprised.

I tried the 95grn bergers but i couldn't spin them fast enough in the 10" twist the rifle had. The 90grn berger were hell on coyotes, that's all i'll say about that. ;)

My 243 barrel is 28 inches long it likes IMR4831 real well ,little bitty groups 90grain NOS BT"s

I did pretty well with the 87 Berger VLDs out long and using a charge of 38.4 of IMR-4064 with Fed201GM primers. Work up to this. I agree with some of the other posters though - better choices for these weight bullets than Varget. Varget is great in 308, but it hasn't been a barn-burner in my 243win.

Mine shoots really well with 37gr of Varget and 90gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. Not sure of velocity but accuracy is great.

Thanks guys for all the advice and suggestions. I know that H4350 or H-4831 SC would probably be better choices but I don't have any and can't get any at this time. I have lots of Varget and I need to load some NOW...that's why I ask...Thanks again for the encouragement.....George

I ran varget w/my 80/85/87/95 g bullets and found that W760/H414 & Blc2 gave smaller groups.
Not the exact bullets you are shooting though.

Ron,
Thanks very much for your comments. That's what I have been looking for and I am going to try some this week. I need to break the barrel in good and then I'll work up a load probably using the Berger 87 Gr. VLD....Thanks again, George
