.243 what to do

Have been looking at my options for modifying my .243 to make it a bit more efficient was going to go straight to 6BRX but have so much .243 brass.
After looking at the dimensional drawings of the 6X47SM wouldn`t be hard to work back toward that its .2 shorter at the shoulder i was looking at coming back .05 and giving it 35deg shoulder but now i might look at coming back .1 with the sharper shoulder and maybe it would perform, would love to see the drawings of the 6mmCM that Joe is talking about. I know this has probably all been done before so if i am wasting my time tell me now while i am still in the thought stage. Looking at something i can use my once fired 243 brass in.

Bob, you could try a 6mm HLS, easily made from .243 brass, long neck & more efficient than .243, similar capacity to 6mm XC. Expensive custom dies not required.

Do you have a link for the caliber you mentioned? I would like to check it out. Nothing to find here when you put it in the search box. I have found it on another search, but no case information was availabe. I did find brass for sale for .10 a case for used cases.

Cntryboy,
The 6mm Competition Match Joe has been talking about dosen`t seem to be anywhere is his design and hasn`t told anyone as far as i know.
And Keith Whats the .243KLS one of your designs is it.
And i should finaly have my 30BR this week Phil dispatched it Wednesday Morning so have a few weeks to get it shooting for State Hunter-Class in Warwick.

No, the 6mm HLS is not one of my designs. It was first done around 1960, it is simply a 6mm Remington shortened to .243 length. The chamber is cut by running a 6mm Remington reamer in short. The dies are 6mm Remington shortened. You need a tapered carbide expander on the decapping rod, one pass through the modified dies & a light neck turn & you are done.

Aussie_Bob, I beleive the 6mmCM is a .243 Win with same body taper and body length, but has 30 degree shoulder with a slightly longer neck.

I sent Joe an email requesting the info on his 6mmCM. It sounds to me like he fireformed the .243 cases to fit his new chamber. I like that a little better than the shortening the dies to do the other cartridge. I have a good bit of .243 brass and like the idea of getting the barrel life Joe mentioned he is getting out his round. I am still in the planning stage of my build so I am still trying to decide which way to go. I'll get it figured out though. Thanks,

Cntryboy,
Yes Barrel life is a big thing with me also but i already get good barrel life i load for accuracy at about 3,000fps MV with 85gr and 1 - 10tw i do not use brass brushes after shooting i spray with G96 then wipe it through with patch apply Wipe-Out let sit and Wipe through with Patches and is usually fine i do not believe in scrubbing Barrels Some times if i am not sure i will give it another treatment with Wipe-Out but has never needed it as it comes out clean.
My Gunsmith friend has a Sako .222 varmint that has had 16,000 rnds through it and it will still shoot MOA no worries, it has never been scrubbed just solvent and patches. Was used culling roos for years.
And as for the 6mmCM who knows if he gives me the dimensions before i am ready to start will see other wise my Gunsmith here says we will start by just altering to 30 deg shoulder not the AI 40degs that will be enough to hold the powder column just right as i use Ar2213sc fairly slow powder will be doing this with my present 1>10tw and when we find what is working for that will order the new barrel in 1>8tw or even 8.5 use 105s or 107s
but no hurry as the new 30BR arrived today so start loads etc Wednesday and shoot State Match Hunter/Class 24/25th October.
Will be after that i will start to play.

Aussie Bob, thanks for the help. I have a .243 that has shot around 1200 rounds so far and the accuracy has opened up a little and I have chased the lands for a while now. I want something that can shoot the same bullets as the .243 but I need to change the barrel to a 8.5 twist myself. I like the Amax 105gr and would like to shoot the 107 as well. I could always move to the 6XC or some other caliber, but if I can make the .243 case work and get more life from the barrel, that would be a bonus for me. take it easy, maybe Joe will send me the info soon and I can take a look at it.
