243 VS 308

i know that both the 243 and the 308 are used in long range target shooting. both are able to shoot 1000 yds, but which one is the better caliber and why?

thats well stated.it all depends on what you want.for deer the 308 gives more whack factor over the 243 at all ranges.the 243 will scoot along faster and with the heavier 6mm bullets.its a toss-up that you will get pros/cons from both sides of the fence.

I don't shoot competitively. I use a rifle for predator control and misc. stuff on a ranch. For me, the .243 is easier to hit with. It's been highly effective on everything I've shot with it,all targets so far have been under 85 pounds). The only downside for me is that it will burn up a barrel a lot faster than the .308.

It really depends on what you are using the rifle for.

I read an artical that was comparing the 308 to an 243AI. They were shooting armored plate steel and the 243 with 100 grain bullet was penetrating the steel and the 308 with 168grain bullet would merely scratch it. This artical was really pumping up the 243AI as twice the cartridge as the 308. Flatter shooting, better penetration, less recoil. In all areas they compared the two, the 243Ai was hands down the winner. My next rifle will be a 243AI. Lee
