.243 twist rate for 58gr-85gr bullets

Been doing a lot of searching and finding answers all across the board. I'm currently shooting a Remington 9 1/8 twist in .243. This particular barrel will only group 85 gr Sierra sp. My specific mission for this rifle is a night hunting set up for coyotes. I would like to run 58 - 75gr bullets. Technically, this barrel should do it, but its not. I highly suspect the barrel is junk, not shot out, just junk.
If I were to rebarrel, probably 20" finished, would you go 10 or 12 twist for this bullet range. No desire to go heavier.
I'm currently running H4895, Varget, and H4350. Given the times, that's what I will have to work with.
Thanks all for any insight.

1-12
Did that 35 years ago with a 27" Schneider pipe in a 243. Really liked 65 Bergers & 65 Cooks were best followed by Nosler 70's and 414 powder, IIRC . Very good groups. 1/4"-3/8" Was before I had a chronograph, so no idea of velocity. It was a "colorful" combination on pasture rats.

PS: also shot the sierra 85gr HPBT great. Did the number on quite a few whitetails.

If you go with the 10" twist you'll be able to shoot deer bullets as well as varmint.

If it's just varmint bullets, I'd go 12"

Hot barrels in the summer are not gentle on the bullet jackets, thus a faster twist will affect accuracy, and worst case some of the bullets will not reach their terminal.

Yes- 10" Shoot up to 100g without problems. Why restrict yourself to 85g?. Go Remage and do the job yourself! I'm sure that theres a fellow on this website that can sort you out a good one. (Urban Rilfeman)

My 6mm Rem is a 10tw and shoots 60-100 grain bullets very well. Never gone below or above those weights. I would not see a reason to limit yourself by getting the 12.

I also vote for the 10 twist. I am shooting a 9 twist right now and have not seen any bullets overstressed. (55gr nosler at 4000fps) I like the heavier bullets for long distance, I would say an 87gr vmax would be a good top end for the 10 twist

Looks like the lean is towards the 10", and I really can't disagree, I'm just gun shy on these lighter bullets...but again, its probably my barrel. Again, this is intended for a coyote night rig, so not looking for mist factor or anything varmint. I cannot hunt deer with it, so stricily dedicated. Thanks all for the responses, I really appreciate it!!!

Use this: https://bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/ You can input various bullet data to see what your current barrel will stabilize.

Less velocity using a 20". 27"/3100 fps. 18"/2700 fps.

Will work well.

My 27" barrel shoots 68 gr to 90 gr hpbt Bergers very well. The 18" barrel needs the shorter 85 gr Sierra #1530. Both are 10 twist
I agree, the 9 1/8 SHOULD work well, but I suspect my barrel is just junk. So, my thoughts were, if I rebarrel, a 10 or 12 twist would be a better route than my 9 1/8 I have now. Leaning towards the 10 I think. 10-4 on the barrel lengths and speeds.

12 twist 65 gr vmax or 69 berger high bc varmits.
Thanks for the reply. As I read this thread and others, I'm kind of thinking the 70-75 gr bullet is where I'll be. This would lean more toward the 10 twist. But, I agree, on the 65's. I'm running a couple of .22-250's as well with 50 gr NBT. Was kind of thinking of stepping that up to a 60 gr...they are 12 tw. So, my thinking(I seem to do a lot of that) is that a 58 or 65 gr bullet in .243 with a slower twist would just be another .22-250, in speeds. I'll use the .243 to step up in weight a little. Hopefully my rambling makes sense. I really do appreciate the responses!!!

55s at 4010, 65s 3850, 69s 3540, 75s at 3490 . 22-250 ain't doing it. Sorry bro

Yah, I have no idea what 60's would do in my 250's. I'm running 3960 with the 50's. My thought or point was fast and light in both calibers. By stepping up the bullet weight in the .243, I could take a little more advantage of that caliber (bigger bore). No offense intended, just spit balling here.

The way I see it a faster twist gives you a choice. My latest 6BR build was intended for shooting 68 gn bullets but I still went with the 1-8 twist. I get .4 MOA 5 shot groups off a bipod and squeeze bag with the 68 flat bases and still have the option of shooting 107's should I want to. I like having options.

Those noslers love speed and you can let them spin very fast
