243 the ultimate long range varmint/ predator gun?

Gilbar, that is a unique firearm. How does it load,a break action or falling block.I would be interested to know what it is.???

Bozo99,
I like your analogy however a 3030 is hard to shoot at 400 yards accurately. Barrels will last quite a while if you don't over heat them, depending on the rifle say a savage a new barrels can be had for less that $120 bucks. Finally the new corvettes get great gas mileage 20 city and 32 highway, and about 28 mpg at twice the posted speed limit. However put your foot in the injectors at every light in town and you'll get only 15 mpg.
Sorry I just had to comment forgive me.

oldhoward,
My 1966 got maybe 15 mpg @ 55mph in 4th gear (BOARING)
Now going up rattlesnake grade (14%) clear to the floorboard, sideways around every corner, then 140 mph down the flats, Lucky to get 4 mpg!!! with all that said I was just making a point. There's a price to be paid for speed, gas, tires ect. in a sports car and barrels in a fast rifle. And your right a 30/30 probably wouldn't be the gun of choice for 400 yd coyote shots ( But the barrel would last a long time) I say barrels @ lets just say $550 threaded and chambered are CHEAP, approx $1.50 per day if it only lasts a year, I bet you spend more than that @ the local coffee shop :-\ And unless your competing with the rifle you would have to be in coyote heaven to shoot out a barrel in a year. I bought a used .243 and killed hundreds of coyotes, and varmints of various kinds, and it took 5 years of daily use to burn the barrel out. So again your right if you don't heat the barrel up you will get a lot of use out of it. I just don't understand the worries about barrel life when wanting a accurate fast rifle. If your worried buy a .22 rimfire or the 30/30, if your not worried spend the $1.50 a day and have a blast. By the way never be sorry for your comments, thats what a forum is all about (Discussions, and opinions ) and I love reading the reply's
to my opinions + or - :) sometimes its fun just to have fun on here with krazy comments.

At what ranges have some of you made kills on varmints and predators with this round? What is your favorite long range varmint/predator load? Would you feel comfortable shooting coyotes beyond 400 yards? An intresting cartridge, but barrel life doesnt look so great.

I have been playing with my .243 at extended ranges recently and if the winds are low or in my favour I will stretch the shots as much as possible.

I hit a hare about a month ago at 704 yds, (Measured with a Nikon 1200 rangefinder) and I hit 8 out of 10 rabbits at around 400yds.

I use 44 grains of H414 behind an 87 grain V-Max. 20 thou off the lands in a Tikka T3 Super Varmint.

Speaking of barrel life, I for one have never really been a fan of "barrel burners", as I have seen how fast one can degrade while just out having fun, as has happened to my 6-284. But I shot it a lot and got the barrel far hotter than I probably should have, and I had a blast doing it. All the fun I had got me to thinking, even if I did smoke the barrel in maybe 1100 rounds, it sure was a fun 1100 rounds and I don't really get the same excitement from other "slower" rifles as I did that one.

So it has lead me down the path of severe overbore yet once again, this time with a 22-6mmAI, from which I hope to get some extreme speed and a whole bunch of fun as well. The reamer will arrive in a few weeks, and hopefully I will have the barrel chambered shortly there after and be out having fun again. I will have 22br and 6br barrels as well for something to last a little longer, but I still think the 22-6mmAI will be the go to gun when I want some real fun.

You can't have your cake and eat it too, just as you can't go fast and have a barrel that lasts.

you might want to check out 243 Catbird. beats the S out of a 243 AI and barrel life sux. As far as i know nothing in 6mm beats the catbird. I know ive tryed a 300 WSM neck down to 6 mm it wont do it

Thanks bozo699. Have a great Thanksgiving. I like accurate rifles like you do and have re-barreled a few recently. Price was at $550 like you said. I have several 243 and they all perform well except for one 1965 Winchester varmint rifle. Had to special order it and was I disappointed when I saw it, waited months for it too. I have tried everything to make it shoot better, it just not in its dna. I keep it around to humble me.

Oldhoward,
You have a great thanksgiving as well my friend. Funny you mentioned the winchester I have one of those as well chambered in 22-250 It was a beautiful rifle, way nicer looking than a rem or other similar rifles, but never shot very well untill I put one of Ed shilens barrels on it, its a tac driver now. the wind is howling here just got the power back on 22 deg and falling fast, I better go get the livestock fed! rebarrel that old varmitier and have some fun with it :)
Wayne.

Wayne you have got to rebarrel that 670,it is to nice to let it sit.Get a shilen select match and call it a day.The .243 my friend shoots is a winny ranger model 70 and makes all 1 shot drops to the ground shots. He is shooting factory 100 grainers and it works fine.It is all about shot placement. As a varmint rifle,it is supreme.I have another friend that shoots a ruger#1 and has shot prarie dogs at over 700 yards with ease.It works on everything from deer down to ground squirrels..

Russ,

Glad to hear you are getting the Berger 95's to stabilize out of a 10 twist. I just loaded some up for my 6mmAI that I just rebarreled with a Kreiger 10 twist. Hopefully they stabilize for me.

My main Coyote rifle is a 243 AI. I lost a coyote one day after making a solid hit on him with my 223 Truck Gun that had a nice short 18" barrel. After that the 243 was the go to rifle. Im running 95gr Berger VLD's @ 3300fps. Run that through your balistic program and see the magic. 400 yards is just the begining, now those dern over hunted areas where the ole boys hang up at 600 yards looking over the horizon to see what new call the stupid human is using now are in trouble, if they sit still that is. Powder of Choice is R19 for this particular barrel. If I would have ordered a 1:9 twist or a faster I might be shooting the 105's but I went with a 1:10 Kreiger Stainless and am stuck with the lighter weight bullets. Still happy with the performance weather close or far. Im prepared for both.

No love for the 6.5 Creedmoor?

My next purchase will be one of these (like the fact I can order loaded ammo - GTG over the Lapua)

"
Steve,
Your friend has a heck of a system going for him, thats good shooting.

GlennGTR1,
I have reread your op and wanted to comment on barrel life. I used to worry about barrel life, not anymore. I don't know if you have ever drove a geo-metro or a datsun b-210, there very boring to drive but if money is tight they get about 50 mpg, now a
corvette won't make it 100 miles if your driving it hard, but what a 100 miles its anything but boring! when it runs out of gas fill it up and drive it another exciting 100 miles. Now you could shoot a 30-30 win thousands and thousands of rounds and still have good accuracy for a 30-30, heck you can't hardly wear one out, but there pretty boring to shoot. Now a .243 shooting a 58 gr v-max @ 4000fps is like driving a vette, very exciting. Every shot is spectacular, bug hole groups on paper and a red mist when shooting varmints for all 1000 rounds or so, very exciting!!! Now when you shoot that barrel out, rebarrel it and get another 1000 rounds or so of very exciting shooting. Most exciting hobbies cost money, spend the money, build the gun,and have
FUN!!!
Wayne."

Well said, my sentiments exactly.

I have shot most of them, 243, 6mmRem, 6mmAI, then I shot the 6BR. The 6BR will out shoot them all, as far as accuracy. The 6BR will run the speeds of a 243, with 10 gr less powder, with great barrel life. I run a 70 Blitzking at 3550 f/s. it for groundhogs out to 800 yds.
