243 Rem Varmint to 6BR

I have a Remington 700 Varmint in 243 with the 1n9.25 twist. Was wondering if there would be any accuracy potential if rechambered to 6BR? It holds 3/4 moa with handloads now in 243.

there is not question the 6br is a more accurate caliber, however the 243 can be very accurate just not as accurate.

I am assuming you want to use it for varmint, not comp. that being the case, the following,

how many round fired 243, this can be a negative as to bbl condition
have you had a smith take a look at the bbl condition and QUALITY
some factory bbls are not worth the money to re chamber
the 6br will not clean up a 243 chamber - you will loose 2" or so of length

I have a 222m that was originally a 223, the bbl proved to be good but the chamber was sloppy, the 222m cleaned it up nicely and it shoots very very well - I lost only 3/8 inch of length

re bbl if there is any question, especially if the round count on the 243 is over 500-700

You'd have to cut quite a bit off the back. Factory chambers are pretty sloppy and any good 6BR reamer would have a much smaller neck than the factory .243....you'd definitely want a complete new neck and throat. I wouldn't bother. Now 3/4moa isn't very good for even a factory gun, it should do better. But if that's really all the barrel has, forget it. Years back a well known company was advertising in Precision Shooting what they called the "poor man's PPC", a Rem. 700V trued and rechambered to PPC. For 6PPC they'd have to have started with .243. So it must work.

Screw on a new tube in 6BR , you'll be further ahead.

this is what i did.. looked at going from 243 and re chamber it in 6BR but it was better and easier to get another barrel and chamber to 6BR.. now i swap barrels between the 2 but i hardly use the 243 anymore.. getting the same speeds out of my 6BR using 105gr bergers as i did the 243 using the same bullets , used less powder and barrel lasts 3 times longer and more accurate than my 243
best thing i did, love it
