.243 Reloading Suggestinos

I have a Model 10 in .243 on the way. Here is what I am going to play with:

Long Range and Deer

100 Speer bthp and Hornady 105 Amax
Bought Winchester Supreme 780 and H100V to get the most velocity

Coyotes (pelt conscious)

70 Sierra Match
Varget running as slow as possible = 3,000 fps

200 rounds new Laupa brass.

Recommendations?

Do you have the 22 inch long, 9.25 twist barrel? I'm basing things off that. The loads below are supposed to have an optimum barrel time of 1.32 or 1.39 ms.

105gr vmax. H1000 is just too slow at the same velocity as w780 it's a compressed load
46.5 gr h1000, 2925 fps, 106% fill
44.0 gr w780, 2890 fps, 94.2% fill

100 gr Speer
47.5 gr h1000, 2950 fps, 105% fill
44.9 gr w780, 2917 fps, 98% fill
46.0 gr h1000, 2840 fps, 101%

70 gr Sierra
45.8 gr varget, 3034 fps, 90% fill

All seated to 2.710 inches oal.

I've been running the 105 a-max/243 for a while with RL 17 at 3075 out of a 26" barrel. awesome antelope round, took one last year at 715 yard. with the combo, 3 coyotes at 800+ also.

+1 on the Reloder 17 for speed
I have a 21.5 barreled sporter that has seen 3200 with 95 gr Bergers with decent accuracy, more work to be done with that combo though. :)

For deer use 85gr Barnes with 2213SC or 2209. It will plonk all big deer deader than dead. We use 55gr Barnes out of a 223 and it does the same job.

No need to stray from a 105 Amax out of a .243 for Deer hunting. EVERY Deer that I've shot or have seen shot with it died from 0-20 yards... I have loaded with several different powders. Lately here I've used Ramshot Hunter.

CPorter...thank you for all of that information. Wow, you really know your stuff.

I may have confused the issue with the other powder, it is Hybrid 100Vâ„¢ from Hodgdon. Any data for that powder with the 100 grain Speer BTSP or Hornady Amax 105 grain is greatly appreciated. I was figuring I would experiment to see if the Winchester or Hornady powder was more accurate.

Been shooting the 243 since over 40 years and its still one of my all time favorites.

The most effective powder I've ever used in the 243, especially with heavier bullets, is IMR 4350.

For deer, I've used the following all with success: Sierra 100 Grain Pro Hunter, Nosler 90 grain ballistic tip (very accurate in my rifles), and the 85 grain Sierra BTHP (accurate and flat shooting); the latter bullet being capable of being an all around bullet for the 243, i.e. for both deer and varmints.

For varmints, my favorite is the 80 grain Sierra Blitz bullet. I've also used the 85 grain Sierra BTHP with good results.

90gr. Accubonds have shot good in mine. Ruger 77 UL.
Killed 1 yote with'em and it hit the ground where is stood. Shot was ranged at 350 yrds. and the exit was about 3/4 - 1".
Guess it will be my deer bullet for next year.

243 Win really excels with 85-100gr pills with that twist. So are you desiring one round for everything or something for deer and something for coyotes? I live in MO and 243 Win is kind of overkill for coyotes unless one is shooting really long distance.

105 gr Amax
W780 42.7 gr, 2746 fps, 91% fill
H100 v 38.5 gr, 2752 fps, 93% fill

100 gr Speer
W780 43.5 gr, 2769 fps, 90% fill
H100v 39.2 gr, 2780 fps, 91% fill

Quickload cautions that these may be a bit warm. They are below max recommended pressures but a tight chamber or something might make them go over pressure.

Again, these are based on a 2.710 " oal. And a 24 inch barrel.

17 rem--you must really shoot a lot esp at 500+ yards.

Good shooting.

It's probably my favorite gun to shoot. I do shoot a bunch at 300-1000 with it and I'm very confident in my drops. I think that makes up a huge part of making longrange shots. Oh and 55gr nosler ballistic tips are a real kick on rock chucks with the 243. Looks like a high speed head on thru the scope.

The 500 amax I bought shoot terrible with Win 780. The Speer show promise but are not fond of the 780. Will try 4350 and H100V next. Wow...it loves the 70 grain Sierra MK with Varget. Whew...at list there is something to make me smile.

Starting to get pissed...have tried about twenty different combinations in my gun and an inch is the best I am getting >:( Going to play with COAL a bit this weekend and it better break the inch or gonna throw the gun in a lake :-)
