243 questions

To all the guys on sight that may be gurus when it comes to this particular round please offer up some suggestions on the following and please dont be judgemental ive shot .223 /.308 and larger but never in between, so i dont know how the 243 260 270 types handle. im rebarreling a savage 12 from 22-250 to the 243 so i dont really need a platform suggestion but i was thinking about the barrel company, ive been looking at mcgowan but befor i make a decision let me know your experience with what you may have worked with in the past. Also what weight in grains would you say handles the best im thinking about staying with the 100 grain bullets but for an all around application what would you suggest. i have heard the 260's burn through barrels like crazy are the 243's similar. sometime the best way to get smart is to pick minds so any other suggestions would be nice and THANK YOU

I have a Remington 700 that was a 220 swift and I rechamberd it to a 243ai I have a Kreiger 1 in 8 twist at 26' length I am getting 3150 fps with the 105 berger and shooting .5 moa all the way out to 600 yards! you cant go wrong with 243 the only issue is with the short action was my magazine length My bullets that are seated to the lands are to long for the magazine but the bullets that I have set a magazine length shoot almost as good real hard to see the difference! The 260 is even longer than the 243 with the length of the 6.5 bullets, Originally I was going to build a 260ai but the length turned me towards the 243ai and Im glad I did and would not change a thing!

I say Krieger all the way!

Gambo25: I shot a .243 Savage 12FV in Factory F Class up here on the Canadian Army ranges all last summer. Took some firsts in the Ontario Provincials with 107 Sierra MKings and 105 Hornady AMax sitting on compressed loads of Rx25. Have also had good luck with Rx22 and Retumbo. The Savage 1-in-9 twist isn`t supposed to stabilize the 107s but they were drilling the V ring with pleasing regularity. The slow powders chronod at 3050 fps which may have helped with bullet stability. If you want a truck gun, stick with McGowen at 26 inches, 1-in-9,I have owned 6 McGowens over the years with good results). If you want a benchrest or long range gun, go with one of the high-end barrelsmiths, 30 inch, 1-in-8 but choose one that can deliver the barrel within a year. I use an Ontario barrelsmith named McClennon who bores and rifles stress-relieved stainless blanks and am very pleased with his barrels.

Thanks for the advice. mabey i should have said what i was wanting to do with it, im probably not gonna push past 6-700 yards. Im not an f-class shooter, i like multipurpose rifles something that can punch paper and still survive in the field.
but im still looking at some of the other barrels so your suggestions arent falling on deaf ears

The cool and funny thing is my rifle is by no means a benchrest rifle I actually built it for long range deer hunting but with the Krieger barrel it shoots! I am actually going to compete for the first time march 21st at the local range,600 yards)I'm probably going to look pretty funny with my hunting setup on a bi pod next to the guy with his 600$ rest but I'm not planning on winning but you never know. the main reason for the competition is experience! Any time you can learn from a old timer jump on it because they know what they are doing most of the time!

I re barreled a Savage with a 1:10' Kreiger Medium barrel. It shoots 95 gr Berger's and lighter stuff really well. Don't overlook the Hybrid 100V powder.....this stuff is amazing with the 243. This combo will shoot honest .2's whistling at 3400 fps. If you go heavier on bullets...go faster twist for sure.

you definetly cannot go wrong with a barrel from mcgowen. i got a 1 in 10 twist done in my remmy and groups with 85grain bullets are awsome last groups shot were less than 1/4'. Good price and fast turnaround.

i would stick with heavier bullets for long range work on deer sized targets.
